Editorial Reviews

2011 release from the hardest-working rapper alive. If he's not running circles around America as part of Paid Dues, the annual Hip Hop festival that he created and organized, he's doing backflips across a stage in Budapest, or shaking hands with fans in Japan before catching a bullet train to a packed in-store performance. When he's not on the road, he's in the studio, feverishly adding album after album to a cavernous discography. From the rhymes in his notepad to the hair on his head, Murs is not your average rapper. Hell, he's not your average guy. Never has been. Listening to Murs is something like listening to a regular guy who just happens to know how to rap. His lyrics are straightforward, down-to-earth, and honest, delivered with a vocal tone and forcefulness that recalls a slightly more relaxed Ice Cube.

5.0 out of 5 stars best since Murry's revenge October 18, 2011
Format:Audio CD
It's been a great year for hip hop and this album has to be among the best releases. The lead single off the album really inspired me to pick this up "Remember 2 Forget". Murs has a way with love songs that too many MCs just can't touch. One of my favorite tracks is "Eazy-E", a tribute to the history of West Coast and Gangsta rap that actually sounds, for lack of a better word, Pretty. "Hip Hop & Love", a song named for the tour, (features Tabi Bonney) is a love story decorated with references to all the great hip hop music that surrounds it. "Life & Time" features D.I.T.C legend O.C., Respect! And the closer, Murs seems to always close his albums with a show stopper, "Animal Style" is a heartbreaking song about a subject that Hip Hop is far too often afraid to touch. It alone is worth the price of the disc.

3.0 out of 5 stars 3.5 Stars November 1, 2011
Format:Audio CD
This effort by Murs is considerably better than Murs for Prez, slightly better than Murray's Revenge, yet not as good as End of the Beginning or 3:16... So, to put it nice and simple, the music is solid, the lyrics and delivery are typical Murs... Beats are mostly slower with a few upbeat tracks thrown in. So, if you like Murs and feel like his newer material has been somewhat suspect, do yourself a service and listen to this entire album. It was a very pleasant surprise for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Murs brings the heat with this new release October 11, 2011
Format:Audio CD
I was expecting to find a half ass album, I mean I went in expecting something horrible and frightening, instead I found something beautiful. 5 star, easily the most complete hip hop album of the year...

3.0 out of 5 stars solid, but be warned March 5, 2013
Format:MP3 Music|Amazon Verified Purchase
Like Blueprint, Murs is incorporating a lot of new textures in his music. If your a fan of his music, and a wide variety of music like I am, you'll find something to appreciate. If you're wanting the same sound album after album, you're out of luck.
Overall, I like it

4.0 out of 5 stars Breaks New Ground June 29, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is the first Murs album I've bought and I was surprised how good it was. He's very anti- major record label, so its different from most rap albums. He does most of his own hooks (and doesn't sing) and pays a lot of homage to the west side. He sort of takes it back to the old school west coast style of rapping, only his lyrics are focusing on today's problems. It's not what I would call an easy listen, but if you are a hard core fan of hip hop, it's a must have. He's a great story teller too, telling one story about running into a cop with 2 lbs. in the trunk, and another about gay intolerance. Yes, I said gay intolerance. When's the last time you heard a rapper speak up for gays? He definately breaks new ground and this cd was a good pick. There are about 4 love songs I always skip though.

When Murs released his album "The Beginning Of The End" in 2003, he already had a decade of recording experience under his belt as a member of 3 Melancholy Gypsies as well as the collective Living Legends. The following year saw Murs link up with indie label Definitive Jux to release his breakthrough "Murs 3:16- The 9th Edition"- a project solely prouced by Little Brother's 9th Wonder. The album was critically acclaimed- despite the criticism surrounding the controversial track "And This Is For...". He teamed up again with 9th Wonder for 2006's "Murray's Revenge"- an album that was released on the Warner Bros. indie subsidiary Record Collection. He returned in 2008 with his major label debut for Warner Bros. Records "Murs For President". While the album was geared toward radio because of its major label association, the record was met with indifference from the record buying public. He returned to an indie label- as well as reuniting with 9th Wonder for their next installment "Fornever" in 2010. A year later, he signed with Damon Dash's BluRoc Records for his next recording- the Ski Beatz produced "Love & Rockets Vol. 1: The Transformation".

While he's on a different label working with a different producer, nothing has reallly changed with Murs. He's still great at storytelling as well as being honest and showing emotion. Look no further than the first single "Remember 2 Forget", where he declines the sexual advances from an ex-girlfriend that caused him so many problems. He also tells the story of a trip gone wrong in Tuscon, Arizona on "67 Cutlass" and pays tribute to the legacy of West Coast hip hop on "Eazy E". He collaborates with Tabi Bonney on the dedication to women who share their same musical interests on "Hip Hop & Love".

4.0 out of 5 stars smooth feel and a nice cohesive atmosphere March 21, 2012
By Dutch
Format:Audio CD
This is a nicely put together album with a smooth feel and a nice cohesive atmosphere. Murs and Ski Beatz collaborate nicely and deliver a relevant piece of work. The production is mainly handled by Ski Beatz, delivering mellow and jazzy-life feel, while producing some hard-hitting beats with a banging feel. Murs performs as per his usual, decent lyrics and flow with a very relevance and on point direction. Murs is definitely not one of the top lyricists but his topics, deepness and humour is quite interesting and attention grabber. The album mainly touches on the West Coast and the beauty of hip hop. Murs does get serious and jovial, which completes the album and presents something for everyone.
