an intriguing listen, if somewhat too aptly titled, August 1, 2004

this here is the frontman of the chills, and these here are some songs he wrote during the 90s which didn't make it onto any of the latter-day chills records. and they're ok; everything here is recorded on a 4-track or worse, and while i'd love to say something about that keeping them pure and raw and exciting, the plain fact of the matter is this: martin's songs are the sort of songs that can't be stripped down. at least not to their advantage. he's a pop musician, and his songs NEED the bells and whistles and flourishes...for the most part. there are certainly a few gems here--the lead-off track for instance--that i would love to hear "upgraded", so to speak. but really, this is just for the die-hards.
