2.0 out of 5 stars Not the best..., December 1, 2003
This review is from: Cafe Del Mar V.10 (Audio CD)
One of the reviewers here said that these compilations have lost steam since Jose Padilla left...that is right and wrong. While I do think vols. 1-6 are all must haves, let's not forget 7&8, both of which are excellent. Vol. 9 is widely considered by most Cafe Del Mar fans to be the weakest in the series (just avoid it all together) and vol. 10 seems to be heading more in the direction of the last volume. One of the reasons why I (and most people) listen to this type of music is to transport us into another world...to make us feel transcendent or alive in a way other music just doesn't. Besides the last few songs, most of this lackluster and boring comp. is repetitive and just not very interesting. Bottom line: If you didn't like vol. 9, you will not like this one either. If you're new to the Cafe Del Mar cd's and this is your first purchase, go back and buy vol. 5 (the best IMO) and then move on the the far superior Hotel Costes or Buddha Bar series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as Vol. 5 and 7. but definitely interesting..., October 19, 2003

I wasn't expecting Vol. 10 to be this mellow and new age sounding but some of the songs are absolutely amazing. Track 11 by Nacho Sotomayor and Track 10 by Vargo "The moment" are beautiful...difficult to define their genre but great! I would recommend this if you are into the spiritual/new age/very mellow sound. Otherwise of the Cafe del Mar's, I think vol. 5 and 7. are AMAZING!!

I have always been a fan of Cafe del Mar albums and a big fan of Jose Padilla's touch in Cafe del Mar's earlier volumes. After Jose Padilla left Cafe del Mar, it took a while for me to get used to DJ Bruno's style. While Padilla seemed to structure his album like a 24-hours cycle (mellow at first and gradually builds up, and then slows down again, like a perfect day), DJ Bruno seems to like his albums to be like slow afternoon hours. His compilations glide from one song to the other, occasionally upbeat but generally mellow and relaxed.

It's difficult for me to pick a favourite track as they effortlessly glide from one to the other. Track #5 is a bit out of place with its grittier tune, but the rest are just nice and groovy. The earlier CdM albums after DJ Bruno took over aren't particularly memorable, in my opinion but Volumen Diez can turn the tide, if he keeps on choosing good luscious groovy songs. Listening to Cd - V.10 in my living room makes me picture lazy beach days, with a glass of chilled margarita and watch the sun sets over Ibiza.
