Good Sampler of a Good Vocalist (and Better Songwriter),
By Marc Dolan (Brooklyn, NY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Vol. 18 - Hoagy Carmichael: La Selection 1927-1942 (Audio CD)
The contents of this whole series (L'Art Vocal) is worth getting, even if the import prices make you look for the same material elsewhere. If you can stomach the price, however, this is a very good sampler of Hoagy Carmichael. He's not as important an interwar vocalist as many of the others in this series, but he is a wonderful songwriter and you get to hear his interpretations of the songs of this CD. By a brilliant stroke, the compilers have bracketed this album with two very different versions of Carmichael's greatest song, "Stardust." The first is the sweet, clean one, Carmichael "and friends" cut for Gennett in 1927; the second is a much more obviously arranged version from the 1940s. The trip between the two says it all.
