Biography

Belgian jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt was a very poor gypsy who lost the use of two of his fingers in an accidental fire at the age of 18. Despite only being able to use two fingers on the fretboard, he still became one of the most popular jazz performers in Europe through the 1930s. When World War II was declared, he went into hiding in Paris, and was able to survive despite the Nazi… Read more in Amazon's Django Reinhardt Store

This review is from: Vol. 2: 1938-1939 (Audio CD)
For the money, there is no better choice. Yes, I got it for about $5 at a record store, but that was a lucky find. You probably won't find it at your average record store. However, the price here on Amazon is well worth it. My first Django CD was a nice looking well done package, but the selection (and quantity) of tunes just didn't satisfy me. Then I found this disc and realized why Django (and Stephane Grappelli) is such an important figure in the history of jazz and the guitar.

Absolutely wonderful, beautiful and energetic performances throughout. I love it so much I just ordered Swingin' with Django Vol. 4 (1937) from the same Naxos Jazz Legends series right here on Amazon. Again, only $10 and it should be of the same high quality as this disc.
