Editorial Reviews

2010 archive release from the British Electronica duo. Though it's debatable whether Future Sound of London actually lived up to the bold proclamation inherent in their name, the club-kid duo of Garry Cobain and Brian Dougans brought a fresh approach to creating the house and hardcore sounds that ruled early-'90s British clubs. Using an eclectic array of samples, and pulling liberally from the various techno subgenres emerging at the time, FSOL produced a sound that in many ways defined the electronic music scene of England in the early '90s, yet remained distinct unto itself. Later FSOL projects incorporated an array of multimedia effects that utilised video footage, radio broadcasts, and PC link-ups. Passion Music.

This is the 3rd in the Environments series, and also features the most new material of any volume from the duo of Brian Dougans and Gary Cobain. Since returning from their self imposed exile, the duo have focused mostly on making psychedelic rock, but still keep the FSOL moniker active with several different series of releases, including Environments. This volume sounds like a return to one of their most popular albums, Dead Cities. Mind you, it's not a full-on follow-up, but it "exists" in the same world, as a sort of companion piece but much mellower. Several tracks are reworked from the past including a remix of My Kingdom. In 2010 there really aren't many electronic acts doing this kind of music on a quality basis, but FSOL prove they are still masters of the game.

Right along with the previous two, this album rates with me as some of the best music I've heard. Amongst the innumberable songs I have in my iTunes library, I always rate FSOL in the 4's and 5's. These albums are particularly interesting given their experimental nature; though, this quality is expected of the pair seeing how their music has never striken me as orthodox. The series thus far has pleased me greatly, and each successive album is as good as the previous. The albums can be listened to should your interests be as simple as relaxing to some awkward yet tantalizing sounds, to supplements to some of the most profound mystical experiences. "Keep bringing 'em," I said, because after finishing each album I await the next with a welcomed anticipation.

The Environments volumes are all excellent!! This is the REAL FSOL, and not the stuff they were doing like the horrible Amorphous Androgynous junk! I almost gave up on FSOL after they started doing that Amorphous stuff but now this is the good old FSOL!!! GREAT MUSIC!! Thank God they are back with the real stuff!
