3.0 out of 5 stars Not their greatest work.
Most people who like this album didn't like their debut or Iowa. Why because slipknot was more heavy on those albums. This isn't slipknots heaviest album. I hope they don't pull a metallica on us and go soft. Now don't get me wrong I love slipknot, but I was dissapointed in this album. Vermillion parts 1 and 2, why would slipknot sing about a girl. Songs that were pretty...

First of all; I already know people will be screaming "SELL OUTS!", but the fact of the matter is this album is truly amazing. All the critics just said that these guys were just people who jumped around on stage screaming useless stuff with no meaning. They have two acoustic songs, one slowish type song and a song that starts off heavy and enters into an acoustic breakdown. Those songs are so creative and crazy, you have no idea.

This album is by far their most mature and in my opinion their best album to date and is a CD that fits everyone one way or another. Corey Taylor's lyrics are really good, but the only downfall is Joey doesn't get to show his skills as much, but we already know he's a bad ass drummer, so it's fine.

I honestly couldn't see them playing this album live, or else they would get booed off stage, because people are close minded like that. When I went to see Slipknot, they only performed four songs ("Duality", "The Blister Exists", "Pulse of the Maggots", and "Three Nil") and they were all heavyish. They wouldn't be able to play "Vermillion", "Vermillion Pt 2.", "Circle", "Danger - Keep Away" or "The Nameless", which all have a nice little soft side to them. My favorite "soft song" is "Vermillion Pt 2."

Now as for the heavy part of the album, pretty much the whole first half of the CD is really heavy. I love "Welcome" the most, just because it's so intense. "The Blister Exists" was really well done too, with the patriotic drum rolls during the middle and at the end. Very catchy stuff.

Overall, it's my favorite album right now and would definitely reccomend this to people with an open mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Swansong ?, May 25, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses (Audio CD)
There will doubtless be many people who will agree with the views of the earlier reviewer who dismisses this album as a "sell out." Apart from the fact that such a comment is a meaningless statement, it says nothing about the actual music.
Lots of "Metal" fans will share such a narrow appreciation of music and dismiss anything which is not a carbon copy of IOWA or whatever they happen to feel comfortable with. However, if you do truly appreciate music as an art form and not something simply to be worn as a badge of honour for your chosen youth movement, then you will listen to Slipknot's latest (and possibly last release) with total delight.

This album displays a warmth previously missing from the Slipknot sound. I love the previous albums however this album covers a range of emotion which is ultimately far more effective than the rather one dimensional out and out rage of their previous work. I personally feel that the tracks on here which are most like the traditional Slipknot sound benefit from being book-ended by slower or more melodic tracks. Whilst some of the previous chaos in the sound has been sacrificied, the heavier tracks take on a more focused aspect.

Opinion on this album will be divided and many Slipknot fans will probably listen once and then play only half the album on repeat listens. Slipknot will not care, they know they have made the best album they could and I believe this is an album they deserve to be proud of.

5.0 out of 5 stars Slipknot Evolve, April 13, 2005

Rebecca Lyle (Garland, Texas United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I've had this record for quite some time now. I know it from top to bottom pretty well. I must say that it is Slipknot's most impressive effort. When you look at their self titled debut, you have a hardcore masterpiece, and Iowa took that up to another knotch. What's next? Vol. 3, is a showcase as to what Slipknot can accomplish as a band. The drumming seems to be showcased the most, as Joey Jordinson is a great skinsman. This record also proves that Mick and Jim are quite the guitarists, as this record is chock full of fast Kerry King like solos. Corey continues to amaze by hitting notes I'd never be able to hit in a life time. Everyone plays their part on this record. What I like best about this record is the fact that's it's so creepy. The samples are absolutely perfect for this record, they provide a dark and dreary atmosphere. This has to be one of the darkest records ever made.

Since I am reviewing the special edition, I'll also go over the material on the bonus disc. The disk starts out with two b-sides, both are great songs, and should belong right with the rest of the songs on the album. You also get a remix of Vermillion, but it's not too different from the original version. Also included is the full version of the album's very creepy outro Danger-Keep Away. The full version is much longer than the original with many more added parts. After that you get four live tracks. Slipknot live is always a good thing.

All in all, a great release. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fair and balanced review, November 8, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses (Audio CD)
The third album from Slipknot is one album that the metal purist despised it and some media outlets praised this album as a great milestone for metal. One thing I could say that this album has great production thanks to Rick Rubin, very polished and yet has some great raw qualities to it. Although Slipknot does not have your blazing solos and crushing vocals that basically turn people away, I saw it as maybe their arrival into more serious metal, where the guitars were crisper, the drumming was great and Corey's vocals were more mature although some points are that some songs are whiny-ish but still good. Slipknot first album was more of a rap metal fest, that had alot of scratching, rap lyrics and seemingly juvenile lyrics, the second album had more of a mixture between Industrial and death metal but the vocals were sometimes way to rough for this band. But the third times the charm, this album is more thrashier, more metal than nu metal and almost a throwback to 80 metal. Gone are the 4 members I thought that should just have their walking papers handed to them, and pretty much became a five piece metal band that it should. The duitars are not downtuned, Joey does play double bass drumming, and Corey ranges his voice more from melodic to brutal. The two guitarrist play better here and actually give great guitar leads and even some solos.

Although it has its good quailities, it also has it's cons such as some juvenile angst songs, some acoustic tracks that became some what saturated around.

Hopefully on the next album, Slipknot can grow more into solid metal and continue the line that that they need to become better. With bands such as Pantera, Slayer, Metallica, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Megadeth and other bands singing the praises of Slipknot, maybe Slipknot are more misunderstood tham hated. I welcome comments both positive and negative.

5.0 out of 5 stars Isn't It Time You Grow Up, You Pathetic Little "Outcasts"?, June 21, 2004
This review is from: Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses (Audio CD)
A lot of people are b*tching that this CD doesn't sound like their earlier stuff and the lyrics here aren't as self-pitying and suicidal. Now I admit, Slipknot first two albums were great, and their debut was probably even better than this, but sersiously, the band had to mature, and so should you. People on this site have been saying things like "I can't relate to Corey's lyrics anymore". C'mon. You can't be THAT pathetic. Do you seriously relate to "F*ck it all / F*ck this world / F*ck everything that you stand for..."? And then you go to school and don't hang out with anyone and act like you're so miserable. Corey realized that his lyrics were good, but he needed to change the subject matter, because he knew he wasn't as pathetic as you all think you are. The lyrics here are better than ever. The guitar and bass and better than ever. The drumming is better than ever, and with Joey, that's to be expected. He's probably the best metal drummer out there. There's almost no DJing or sampling here, only some at the beginning of "Pulse of the Maggots" and random other places, but that's not a big deal. DJing belongs in rap music. But the bottom line is this: Slipknot came out when Nu-Metal was big. Nu-Metal was good, but it was basically just a whole bunch of bands whining about how sad they are. Slipknot did this A LOT on their debut, and some on "Iowa", but now Nu-Metal is dead (and sadly rap has taken over, but that too will pass just like Nu-Metal did) and Slipknot realized that they probably should change, and now, there is virtually NO whining in the lyrics. If you're really so pathetic, go kill yourself. It's not like you're actually gonna.

And, by the way, the acoustic tracks are beautiful. "Duality", "Vermillion", "Before I Forget", "Vermillion pt. II" and "The Nameless" are some of the best tracks 'Knot have ever written. So get used to it or remain a pathetic little outcast and continue complaining about it. It's not like Slipknot care.

5.0 out of 5 stars special edition, May 28, 2005
This is the SE of Vol. 3. It includes the full original record, plus some extras. A few lives songs and some others that are not new, just haven't been put on any of their main records before. One of the extra songs is on some video game, can't remember which one right now, sorry. Fanatics will want to buy this just for the joy of owning the "special edition." The one thing I am sad about is that the cover on the SE is way better than the cover on the original Vol. 3. I really wish they would have used this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great music for angry socially inept teenagers., March 14, 2007
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses (Audio CD)
I agree with the guy that said that. Now if you are one of those types that are sitting on top of the social pyramid in high school, wearing your overly expensive pink polo shirts with your colars popped listening to Paris Hilton, if you are just some ditzy airhead broad obsessed with pink and pretty boys, or if you are just some 35 year old loser living in his parents basment who is just all stuck in the 70's and the 80's then this kind of music definitely isnt for you!

But if you were like me in high school one of the poor, quiet, socilally inept ones wearing Band T-shirts who wishes all preppies and popular kids would just suddenly burst into flames than this kind of music is the ultimate chill out music!

This what I want to say! I am sick and tired of all this bashing of Nu-Metal! What is so bad about it? And who are you to say that its dead? I listened to this band since I was 12 years old (I am 19 now) and I never got sick of it (this alblum anyways that new stuff is junk)! If you were assumeing I am some teenager who doesnt know real music you are wrong! I like all kinds of metal! If you are going to call me a poser metal head you are wrong! I have respefct for all kinds of metal! I like stuff like Soilwork, Trivium, Dio, Nevermore, Dragonforce, and etc. etc. I like everything from classic metal, power, death, black, nu metal and beyond!

I am just sick of all this bashing of nu-metal. You have no right to judge all nu-metal fans as idiot narrow-minded teenagers! Seriously Its just like me judgeing all you narrow minded classic rockers as 35 year losers who live in their mother's basement! If you were a "true metalhead" as you call yourself surely you would have respect for all kinds of metal! If you are saying nu-metal is talentless you must be a retard! Every genre of music is talented in its own right (except for teen pop and rap.)

Seriously why bash Slipknot if the Backstreet Boys just came out with a new CD? I am sure even you would rather listen to Slipknot than listen to them. I know I would. Like I said I am tired of hearing "Nu-Metal is dead!" So Hair Metal or Glam Metal is not dead? Yeah right! You are saying nu-metal is dead but I dont reckon the genres I just listed stayed for long now did they? Dont get me wrong I like that kind of stuff too.

As time goes by things change! Get used to it! People who were raised around different things like different stuff! I was raised around nu-metal so what do you expect? Although I do like everything else. Seriously I hear alot of people saying extremely cruel and uncalled for things about nu-metal fans and saying things like "I hope all u nu-metal fanz get AIDZ" or "I wont 2 kill mislef wen I heer dis!!" I think it is wrong to hate people just because they like a different genre of music than you do! So wish such a terrible thing just because I like a different kind of music than you do? You are sick! And if you are going to kill yourself just over music then you must be a retard. I listen to whatever kind of music I want! And If you have a problem with that you can shove it!

So what if Slipknot sounds like every other rap metal band. Hey most hair metal bands sound exactly the same as eachother so there. Yeah so they rip off of Korn and so on. Then again what band doesnt these days. Seriously who's to say what "True Metal" is and isnt? Who makes all these rules anyways? Whos to say whether or not a band has talent? If they are better than N'Sync who cares? Sorry about my rambleing. I have no other place to post such thoughts because I hate myspace! Now about Slipknot. Yeah I know they sound like every other nu-metal band but hey who cares! I dont even know what I just said...

5.0 out of 5 stars Nothing wrong with the New Knot, May 25, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses (Audio CD)
OK, the new Slipknot is different. But at the same time, it's amazingly beautiful. The heavy, flesh tearing tones are there, they are just a little more structured now. I loved the first two albums (who didn't) but now they take what they did on the first two albums and structured it a little more. Slipknot doesn't have to be heavy to remain on the top of the metal heap, they just chose to be. And now because they want to try something a little different, people want to shun them and say they have changed for the worst. I still enjoy The Knot, and some of the better songs on the CD are "Duality," "Opium Of The People," and "Three Nil." Some may consider the new Knot too close to being Stone Sour-esque on some of the songs, but that is just Corey stretching his vocals even further than before to try to silence critics who say Slipknot is nothing but screaming and growling. I give it five stars because the Knot is back, and better than ever in my opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect!, June 30, 2004

Karen Mallory "Austin (Karen is my mom that I... (My living room..or family room I guess?, California United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses (Audio CD)
This is exactly what I could have hoped for in Slipknot's latest album. There's still the heavy, f- the world songs, but Corey also pours out his emotions without screaming them in some. This CD has one bad word, which is in 'Duality.' ("I've wished for this, I've b**ched at that) However, the only downfall to this album, which I didn't really mind, is that it's more like Stoneknot than Slipknot. Corey shows his real feelings without screaming, which "is what Stone Sour is for." If you listen to the whole CD through you will know this is no Stone Sour. He does a lot more singing which takes away from the normal brutality of Slipknot, which is a good thing because Slipknot is very talented and do not normally get the chance to show it off. They show it in this CD very much. Corey's amazing voice in almost every song, Joey's amazing skill in "Welcome" and "The Nameless," Mick and Jim's talent with sweep arpeggios in "Opium of the People" and crazy fast finger movements in "The Nameless." This CD hardly has any 'DJing' in it, but it rocks all the same.

"Volume 3: The Subliminal Verses" is my favorite Slipknot CD. However, I haven't heard "Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat.," but it is my favorite of the three later released. The barcode album was great but it only had a handful of good songs like "(sic)," "Eyeless," "Wait and Bleed," "Surfacing," "Me Inside," "Liberate" and "No Life." I dislike "Iowa" because there is too much anger there and it makes for not as good songs. This CD delivers everything needed for a good album. Even with two acoustic, yes, acoustic, songs, "Circle" and "Vermilion Pt. 2," "Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses," is an excellent album you should pick up even if you're not a Slipknot fan. This CD is a good heavy metal CD that should be in every collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Metal Is Metal, May 31, 2004
By
"palmnail" (Rapid City, SD) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses (Audio CD)
First off, I think the purpose of metal is to remove the sick antics and brutal corporate poundings of plastic artists such as: Britney Smears, Christina Aglacaca, or whatever their record company wants to call them. Metal is metal and its one of the most purest of music out there. I chose metal as my music, because of the fact that it reaches down to the root of every emotional nerve. It moves you the way no other music can. The sound of the guitar, the pounding drums, all of it. But lyrically, I think no other music is capable of capturing that spirit of humanity. Black Sabbath, Pantera, Slayer, Metallica, Korn, etc. The so-called label of nu-metal is what separates the glory and power of metal. Don't be so negative about the way metal musicians develop these days. Reading these reviews, only heightens the belief and deconstructive plans of the musical mainstream of POP music. (To me, anyway.) No matter how microscopic we get into each bands delivery, we should not forget the overall status of the METAL genre itself. Stand up and raise your chalises to the sound of METAL, don't sit and ponder or conjure up another reason for the corporate wolves to demean and criticize METAL. Someday, it might not be there. And our emotions and lives will be represented by the likes of the new Hanson album or John Mayer. Slipknot can still walk across America and beyond, with a heavy hammer and destroy. They are at the top along with all our brothers in metal. Metal never tries to put itself on a pedestal. It waits eagerly with us in the pit and in the crowd to overcome the plastic and glass and shatter and tear through the constant barrage of POP music. So grab ahold of the sledge and show the world the might and power of metal. Or you can dance? You can whistle and hum along to that nifty new CD by another American Idol.

Volume 3: The Subliminal Verses...now we know why they used this title. The "Duality" of their audience...is that a question? We certainly seem to be hearing alot of answers. How well do we know METAL. Are we that brainwashed to just let our souls attain the fury of just being human? Take it all in. All at once. Otherwise......oops....she'll do it again!

This CD is brilliant. I recommend it to any true metalhead out there. Doesn't matter where you buy it. Just get it. Can you imagine the sound of 200,000 people in a crowd, shouting as one. Or are you that one person whispering the echo of Tipper Gore.
