5.0 out of 5 stars The wonderfulness of Hagen, August 11, 2005

An absolute joy of a soundtrack from one of television's greatest (guilty?) pleasures. Composer Earle Hagen created brand-new music for each of I Spy's three-seasons-worth of episodes ... some 80 hours of television ... an amazing feat when other shows - even today - rely on just a few key musical cues. Here are half a dozen scores on 20+ tracks culled from eps throughout the series run (1965-1968). If you loved this series, or love big band or jazz, go for yourself and grab the CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Coolest of the Cool, Hobie., July 26, 2010

This review is from: I Spy, Vol.5 No.10 (Audio CD)
Oh, yeah!!! There's nothing quite like those searing strings, the great jazz (remember the Mad magazine parody, where the characters wonder why there's jazz being played every time there's a fight scene?? Hilarious!) in nearly every scene, and the general beauty of each score. Check out Hagen's homage to Aaron Copeland's "El Salon Mexico," in one of the episodes (I leave it to you to discern where it is), as well as the simply gorgeous "Mainly in the Plains" episode music. The episode featured Boris Karloff, and the score is lush and evocative. Ah, life is grand, and is even grander with this CD in my collection. "I Spy" will always be a component of my youth, and I'm glad that this is finally on CD, albeit as a limited edition. I think it best to pick this gem up before it's too late, and it becomes a high-priced collector's item. Oh, and by the way, "Hobie" is what Cosby used to call Culp, referring to Bob's character Hobie Gilman in the 1957-59 "Trackdown" series. Bob will be missed.

This is a must-have for "true true" I Spy fans. Hagen brings the listener rich scores of 5 selected episodes, each new and originally composed to reflect the exotic locales in which the series was shot. Here we are treated to China, Japan, Spain and Mexico, with tracks that combine cultural musical recognition with the now familiar "I Spy" major and minor themes resulting in the distinctive series sound. A particular favorite is Track 4, a glorious 4 minutes and 10 seconds of breathing rhythm and riveting jazz action that is completely unique and practically unheard of in today's series television. An added bonus is the accompanying 24-page booklet that details the musical - and artistic - efforts necessary to provide each set of episode tracks. This is indeed wonderfulness.
