5.0 out of 5 stars Their Most Remarkable Album to Date !, July 1, 2002
This review is from: Vol. 1 - Club Classics 10th Anniversary (Audio CD)
What a disappointment back in '89 when I first purchased the original cd to find that their biggest hit Back To Life was only an accapella version. You could only obtain the orchestrated video version if you purchased the maxi single cd or the single cassette ! Well, this club edition of the cd more than makes up for lost time. It makes me greatly appreciate what groundbreaking club, dub, and soulfully deep-bass music sounds like. This title is still fresh and unforgettable as the first time I heard it. With it's Jamaican, reggae-influenced grooves Soul II Soul was definitely a musical group that would later be greatly emulated or imitated by others (listen to the European group Enigma's smash 1990 instrumental hit Sadeness)! From the heartfelt and soulful vocals to the rich instrumentation this cd was the blueprint for later artists to be inspired by if not strongly influenced...

5.0 out of 5 stars Good II Better, June 24, 2002
By
This review is from: Vol. 1 - Club Classics 10th Anniversary (Audio CD)
Ten years after its release, the fabulous debut from inflential Soul II Soul gets re-relased with three additional mixes. A fuse of r&b, reggae, African rhythms, and pure funk, Jazzie B's unique sound would be copied by several pale imitators. Yet, there was no denying the Real Thing. "Keep On Movin'," "Jazzie's Groove," and "Back to Life" sound just as vital as they did back in 1989. This album deservedly went platinum and earned them a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist (which they lost to, um, Milli Vanilli). However, the group began to sell less records with each subsequent release before they finally faded from the spotlight. But the power and influence of this straight-up classic still lives on. This disc comes highly recommended for both casual listeners and soul fanatics alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Sure "Soul" Delight, February 11, 2002
By
This review is from: Vol. 1 - Club Classics 10th Anniversary (Audio CD)
It's hard to believe that after 13 years of its release, Soul II Soul's "Keep On Movin'" still stands as being one of the best recorded albums ever. Another one of U.K.'s finest brilliantly created a distinct sound in fusing melodic rhythms of Funk, R&B/Soul, Hip-Hop, and Dance. As a result, some of the biggest hits became staples on both R&B and Pop stations during '89 such as the infamous title track and the monstrous classic "Back to Life," both led by female vocalist extrodinaire Caron Wheeler. Another jam is the thunderous "Jazzie's Groove." Bonus treats are also added here for pure listening enjoyment. A sure gem to own.

5.0 out of 5 stars CANNOT SAY ENOUGH ABOUT THIS ONE, February 1, 2007
This review is from: Vol. 1 - Club Classics 10th Anniversary (Audio CD)
i love this right here because what was not on the original album is on this one. my neck tingles from the mems of first hearing it. the one that stands out for me though is not what you think!!!!! for me, it was thast piano part of JAZZY'S GROOVE. just that part DA-DUN-DUH-DUH-DUH-NUH drives me absolutely INSANE!!!! of course, there is KEEP ON MOVIN', BACK TO LIFE, ARE YOU READY, and FEELING FREE that gets me levitated. look here, if you like them grooves that take you somewhere else in their own way, then you will dig this one here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great then; great now., March 29, 2000

This review is from: Vol. 1 - Club Classics 10th Anniversary (Audio CD)
I first bought this cd in 1989 and it quickly became a favorite. It was then stolen a few years ago and I never replaced it until now. When listening to this cd again, it's almost hard to believe it's 10 years old. The music maintains a comtempory feel and allows you to believe it's a new release. This cd is worth having in any collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great CD!!!, November 4, 2006
This review is from: Vol. 1 - Club Classics 10th Anniversary (Audio CD)
British soul at its best. It introduced Caron Wheeler who went solo shortly after this CD came out. The songs on this CD still sound good to this day. Although the remixes are not necessary, it is a great addition to the CD. The CD is definitely a classic. Buy it now!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fresh and cool as ever ten years on, July 6, 2000

This review is from: Vol. 1 - Club Classics 10th Anniversary (Audio CD)
With the release of the tenth anniversary edition of Club Classics Volume 1 in 1999 I realised that this CD has rarely been off my player in the last decade. This album rejuvenated the English hip-hop/garage scene in 1989 and today remains as fresh and cool as ever. With bass lines that reverberate up and down your body and a feel that conjures up images of some of the greatest clubs, Club Classics Volume 1 has not dated. From Caron Wheeler's amazing vocals on track 1 (Keep on Movin") through to Jazzie's Groove and However Do You Want Me the album presents us with soulful, danceable music

Presided over by the wonderful Jazzie B and mixed like a DJ's set, this album from Bristol set the scene for the future Bristol groups Massive Attack and Portishead. Ten years on it's a shame to realise that Soul II Soul never quite hit the same heights as this 1989 classic with their subsequent releases. Buy this and learn how truly soulful UK music can be when it is infused with passion, African rhythms, Caron Wheeler's voice and a sense of irony. Go buy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Where are they?, April 24, 2000
This review is from: Vol. 1 - Club Classics 10th Anniversary (Audio CD)
...there were a lotta singers and groups from Bristol, England and nearby parts who jammed! I believe Soul II Soul and funky brits Loose Ends came from the same area there, the only ties I know of influencing the music remaining is the Massive Attack--which may or may not still be together. Anyway that Bristol soul sound was at an apex when this album came out--and it's subsequent "Keep On Running" video with sexy singer Caron Wheeler at the helm. It's hard to believe that they are nowheres to be found because their sound, their style were hot...

By A Customer
This review is from: Vol. 1 - Club Classics 10th Anniversary (Audio CD)
this album is a combination of soul & housebeat music. it contains dance music, acapella & contemporary jazz. the type of music created is really cool where you could relax after a day's work & listen to tracks like jazzie's groove, joy & feel free.overall if you'd like something with soul, jazz and house music, this is the right album that you need to look for.

This review is from: Vol. 1 - Club Classics 10th Anniversary (Audio CD)
if they camed out now they wouldn't sound much different from todays uptempo r&b.but at the time they were verry fresh and new.i always remembered the songs keep on movin, and back to life.i liked keep on movin but i never liked back to life.i just never knew who made these till early this year. plus i didn't know they were from the uk either.this album prooves that teddy reily didn't make the new jack swing era all by his self.some might say that the newjack swing era sound totally different from soul 2 soul's sound.but they both concintrate on dance r&b with a hip hop beat.but like i said if they had camed out now they wouldn't be anything new. production wise they would sound better from the rest.but thats where the inovation will end.the roots, the goodiemob, etc sounds just like them.
