Since the Blu-ray version of Volbeat's Live From Beyond Hell/Above Heaven won't play on US players, I went ahead and gave the DVD version a try. It may not have quite the same crisp picture and sound as the Blu-ray, but the DVD still looks and sounds terrific, and hey, at least it can be watched. So, on to the content of this DVD:
Main Program - Spread across 2 DVDs, Live From Beyond Heaven/Above Hell features roughly 2.5 hours of live concert footage from Volbeat's 2010-11 tour. The main program, which takes up all of disc 1, is an amazing 18-song performance filmed in Copenhagen, Denmark in front of a very large, very enthusiastic home crowd. Once the curtain drops about a minute into opening song "The Mirror and the Ripper," you know you're in for something special. The band hits the highlights (most of them, anyway) from their four albums, and seems to be having a fantastic time at it. There are multiple camera angles and some great crowd shots. The set is also notable for a few guest appearances, including Taggy Tones bassist Jakob Oelund on "16 Dollars," Entombed's L.G. Petrov on "Evelyn," former Mercyful Fate guitarist Michael Denner and Kreator frontman Mille Petrozza on "7 Shots" and Danish boxing champion Mikkel Kessler, who pumped the crowd up during "A Warrior's Call." It's an amazing show from start to finish, and that alone would be worth the price of the DVD.
Disc 2 features a 7-song performance recorded in 2011 in Anaheim, CA. It's a smaller scale show, and one that American fans who have caught the band on tour will find more familiar. Rob Caggiano and Scott Ian of Anthrax make guest appearances. There's also a short 3-song set from the band's performance at the 2011 Rock am Ring festival in Germany.
Bonus Content - There's really not much in the way of extras here (not that the DVD really needed any). There's a bit of behind the scenes material, but that's it. It would have been nice to have the promotional videos from the last two albums included, since that's where the Live: Sold Out! DVD release left off, but that's a minor gripe.
The Verdict - Buy it already! Seriously, I get why people are angry at not having a viable Blu-ray option, but this concert material is so amazing you really don't want to pass it by. If you're a Volbeat fan, the Live From Beyond Hell/Above Heaven DVD is a must have.
I first heard a Volbeat song at a hockey game - Warriors Call. I would have bet it was Godsmack (an absolute favorite of mine!), but couldn't find it anywhere. I finally searched the web using some of the words from the song. Bought the CD and it hasn't been out of my player yet. At first, I wasn't sure about the song called Evelyn - i describe those songs as "cookie monster rock" - but it grew on me. Check them out, especially if you've been Godsmacked!
This dvd is awesome- I LOVE Volbeat, but the likelihood of my ever making it to one of their performances is pretty slim. I'm too old to tolerate the crowds, so this is a great way to have the next best thing.
I am new to Volbeat. I heard them on the radio sing "Doc Holiday" and I was hooked. This DVD is fantastic! It plays just fine on my blu-ray player. I own all the CDS and DVDs. I can't wait to see them in concert at Rocklahoma in May 2015 and at Pop's in St Louis on May 31st, 2015. I would truly recommend this DVD and all the Volbeat CD's that Amazon sells.
