Editorial Reviews

Review

“Highly recommended.”
(C. L. Hebblethwaite Choice 2011-06-29)

“This book is the book to have if volcanoes are your thing. . . . A useful addition in any scientific library.”
(Helen Ashton Emerald Journal 2012-01-01)

From the Inside Flap

"Volcanoes of the World compiles and lists all of earth's eruptions into one primary scientific source. It is a fundamental research tool and the last word on many issues. There is nothing else like it."—William I. Rose, Michigan Technological University

"Volcanoes of the World stands alone. To my knowledge (as a practicing volcanologist for more than 4 decades), there are no competing works in the scientific literature comparable in purpose, scope, and scholarship."—Robert Tilling, Volcano Science Center, U.S. Geological Survey

I would highly recommend the third edition of Volcanoes of the World.
This is an authoritative, well illustrated and updated version of the
1994 edition of Volcanoes of the World.

I thought this was going to be a 'fun' book, in the way of a coffee table volume with pretty pictures of volcanoes and some general information for a layperson. This was not the case at all; when I opened it and saw it is basically a catalog of volcanoes, I shrugged and shelved it. But apparently this is an important reference book, one of very few that is published regularly that catalogues volcanic eruptions in a concise format. I bought it on the cheap here, then happened to be doing some research at school for a volcanoes class, and this book came up repeatedly as source material. Turns out my uni doesn't own a copy; I may buy a 2nd copy and donate one to the library.

This edition was published in 2010 I think, so it's not totally up to date; if you're looking for data about eruptions since then, you'll have to check the internet or wait for the next iteration.

This is like a phone book for Volcanoes. The price was great. It looks like a textbook about Volcanoes, but it's really just a comprehensive list of volcanoes around the world.
