I have a 1970 Volkswagen Beetle Type I, and the Bently Manual has helped me more than any other book during the car's restoration.

Most reprints have black and white wiring diagrams... this one has color.

I purchased your book from a local VW Dealership and paid a lot more than what you sale it, but the book was still worth to me what I paid for it. My only disappoint is with the wiring diagrams lines are not in color. I ordered the book because the one I saw had the wiring diagrams in color. In effect the diagrams are basically the same as those in the Haynes catelog which is about a third the cost. Understand my point here, cost is not the issue the lack of color photos is my dissatifaction. Overall you manual is EXCELLENT, easily 5 STARS. I AM WILLING TO PAY TO FOR A COPY OF THE COLORED WIRING DIAGRAM FOR A 1972 KARMANN GHIA. IS THIS SOMETHING THAT YOU HAVE???

This is by far the best shop manual available for the Beetle and Ghia! I have a 1970 Volkswagen Beetle Type I, and the Bently Manual has helped me more than any other book during the car's restoration. It has just about all the information you could need from a manual. And hey, it *is* the official service manual, published for Volkswagen!! There is only one downside which is not a major problem but certainly would help: there's no Index.

If you were to only buy one book on how to repair your Bug, DON'T buy this one. While it does contain a lot of information, it has several problems.
First, it does not have an index. Second, it does not even have a centralized table of contents. Instead, each chapter has its own table of contents.
Next, the book assumes you are working in a profesional mechanics shop, with hydraulic lifts, etc. This was made clear to me, when the section on removing the engine said to LOWER the car to 3 feet.. Shoot, I barely got the car above 2 1/2 feet with my floor jack, and that was using wood props. Also, they tell you to use lubricants that are not common, which can be substituted with a more common lubricant.
If you have the money to blow, it probably is good to have this guide, as it is the "official" one, but I would recommend the Haynes guide above this one any day.

I have been hobbying with old cars most of my life. I always buy the service manual for whatever I work on, so I have seen a lot of books in my 62 years. As official service manuals go, this one is mediocre. Just did not have the trouble-shooting info that I expected. Also, illustrations are kind of weak in my opinion. Plus, it doesn't do a real good job distinguishing the differences among the newer versus older vw's. However, it is probably the best of what I have seen available. So if you are gonna work on a vw: get it. You will especially need it if you work on the fuel injected types.

There are all kinds of repair resources available online - and oftentimes the backyard auto gear-head can start to believe that most every issue can be solved in online forums where collective knowledge and experience on very specific subjects is easily accessible. That said getting onto forums whether on a mobile phone or a PC isn't always the brightest idea in the hot greasy confines of a garage or when troubleshooting - or even rebuilding an engine. Sometimes the best thing is to go back to the source, the official manufacturer's text / reference guide for the product. In the case of the Super Beetle / Beetle, such is the case.

The wealth of information - from electrical schematics to torque specifications on almost every single bolt and fastener in the vehicle - the Bentley manual is a handy reference whether you're a restoring, repairing, or attempting to troubleshoot in a vain effort that combines google queries and forum posts. This guide is the THE framework for understanding your vehicle, and the forums and internet resources on your desktop (or iPhone) are for filling in the blanks.

It's funny - Volvo fans call the Bentley service manual for 240's the "Bentley Bible." And they're not too far off when they call it that; it is Bible, the word, when it comes to many different vehicles - especially those of the northern European variety.

This is the only service manual you will ever need for your vintage, (1971-1979), Volkswagen Beetle and Ghia. Only one Major flaw with this book. Wiring diagrams. The ones in this edition are in black and white. I have an original edition from 1975 and all the wiring diagrams were in full color. All in all this is a great manual and should be added to anyones Volkswagen repair library. Next edition, please bring back the color wiring diagrams.

This manual is geared mostly for dealer/independent shop employees who have already been trained and/or have vast knowledge of the specific vehicle(s) covered. This is not a downfall, just there are manuals more suited for 1st time owners, and even sharp mechanics with little air cooled VW experience. Does have good OE part specs. DO GET this manual, just not as a very first purchase.
