I bought this to use with an electric toothbrush charger while traveling in Europe. I have not used it in Europe yet, but tested it at home with a 120-240 step up transformer. This is a light duty unit, so it should only be used for very light loads, not hair dryers, etc. But that is not the problem. As with this device's "step up" twin, the transformer seems fine, but the socket is very, very low quality. A regular US flat blade plug is very loose in the socket, which is a typical round/flat combination connector. My solution is to plug a round-to-flat (europe to US) adapter plug into it and plug my US plug into that. In my particular unit, this works fine, but since the quality control is really, really poor, you might get one that doesn't even work that way. I ordered the step up version at the same time, and the equivalent connector on that was totally useless. For details, see my review on that. These things were really, really inexpensive, so I am not terribly disappointed, but if you need it to work out of the box, spend more money for higher quality.

Safety issue: Unlike better versions of this type of converter, the transformer that is the heart of this device does not isolate the power line from the appliance it is powering. Furthermore the connectors are not polarized or grounded. The result is that there is a significant chance that the appliance could expose the user to the 240 volt line voltage.

The problem with the converter is that is will not fit into the round European outlets. One needs an additional adapter plug that extends the "square" converter to fit into the round receptacle. This is not a serious problem since these "extenders" are inexpensive. But have one on hand since the converter can not be used w/o one.

I recently bought the 220v to 110v step down voltage converter for use during my vacation in Northern Ireland. The product is well made and is of high quality. There is a problem though as the two (2) pin round prong plug cannot fit in the conventional three (3) pin square socket outlet. For the item to be of any use I had to use another adaptor with a three pin square prong and then to plug the two pin to it.

Another word of caution though, is that some people simply buy universal adapators for use in Europe for USA 110v appliances. This practice is not recommended since in Europe the voltage is 220 and can cause damage plus a fire risk by plugging an adaptor without a STEP DOWN VOLTAGE CONVERTER.

The transformer was dismantled after 10 minutes of using (after heating - was connected to 220Vac input).
The product is not doing the requested job - I just plug in it to 220Vac and after 10 minutes it's just heated and dismantled.

Pls do keep in mind my friends that this item is for short term use only like 15-20 minutes and not more than that. So be careful before buying

I purchased this for use during a vacation in Finland. I am not an experienced traveler so despite much research I did not realize that the shape of this converter is completely incompatible with the recessed outlets found there. As a result I was completely unable to use the devices I intended to use with it. Perhaps there are other countries that do not recess their outlets and it could be used in those. I also wondered if the metal wires wrapped around the outside were entirely safe & well grounded.
There may be other countries where this can be used effectively but for me it was a very unsatisfactory purchase.

Do not buy this product. Spend a little more and buy a quality product. I purchased it elsewhere and was surprised to see its still being sold! Not only it almost burned out my phone charger, it probably would have started fire, if no one was around. It was so hot and probably would have started to smoke, but I pulled it out of the socket. It was used in Europe as mentioned on the label to convert from 220V to use with 110V USA small gadgets. Also the round prongs on this unit is too thin and ill fitting in European sockets, which itselt is a safety hazard.
