Book Description

0750636343 978-0750636346 August 14, 2000 2
Power transfer for large systems depends on high system voltages. The basics of high voltage laboratory techniques and phenomena, together with the principles governing the design of high voltage insulation, are covered in this book for students, utility engineers, designers and operators of high voltage equipment.

In this new edition the text has been entirely revised to reflect current practice. Major changes include coverage of the latest instrumentation, the use of electronegative gases such as sulfur hexafluoride, modern diagnostic techniques, and high voltage testing procedures with statistical approaches.

A classic text on high voltage engineering
Entirely revised to bring you up-to-date with current practice
Benefit from expanded sections on testing and diagnostic techniques

5.0 out of 5 stars A "must have" book if you are a high-voltage (> 100 kV) addict :-) !, August 6, 2011
This review is from: High Voltage Engineering Fundamentals, Second Edition (Newnes) (Paperback)
This book is invaluable not only to a professional engineer, but also if you are an amateur, who builds and runs high voltage generation devices, such as Van de Graaff generators and/or Marx generators. One of the valuable things, which is contained in this book, is the description of high voltage measurement (sure, if you want to generate high voltages, you have to have some means of measuring them !). The book contains a compilation of tables, which, given the gap size at which the discharge occurs between the two spherical electrodes of equal diameter, provides you with the estimate of the voltage at the moment of discharge. The tables contain the sphere sizes ranging from 6.25 cm to 2 m, the gap sizes from 5 mm to 2 m and give you the resulting breakdown voltages roughly from 17 kV to 2.6 MV. Having these tables, it is rather easy to estimate, for instance, the maximal output voltage of your Van de Graaff generator. Those, who want to build a Marx generator, will find a valuable discussion on the theory of operation of such generators, also dealing with some common misconceptions regarding their operation. In addition to this very practical information, for those, who want to understand the mathematics of calculation, for example, of the electrical field intensity between the electrodes of various shapes, an extensive mathematical treatment is given there as well. Also, there are the descriptions of the true commercial scale "monster" high voltage sources, and how they operate, which is very interesting. A nice addition is a discussion of the theory of lightning, lightning dangers and lightning protection. In short, there is a lot of high voltage :-) "bang" for the buck!
