If you're not lucky enough to live in or near Seattle and catch these guys live at a big festival or at one of their intimate local gigs, you'll have to settle for this download (or for the CD, available on their website, mctuffmusic). Their name pays tribute to one of the masters of the Hammond B-3 organ, Jack McDuff. As befits a tradition that includes such luminaries as Jimmy Smith, Joey DeFrancesco, and Shirley Scott, their music is a smooth, sophisticated, high-energy blend of jazz, funk, blues, and rock, both exciting and danceable. The group's leader, Joe Doria, works with a rotating cast of characters, but his core sidemen are the inventive Andy Coe on guitar and the adventurous D'Vonne Lewis on drums. On this, their first album, they team with saxophonist wildman Skerik, founder of Skerik's Syncopated Taint Septet. Everyone gets plenty of space to work out on these tracks, and their playing is never less than brilliantly executed and infectiously enthusiastic.
