A Lovely Overview of International Volunteering,
This review is from: Volunteer: A Traveler's Guide to Making a Difference Around the World (Lonely Planet) (Paperback)
This is the perfect title for those looking for international volunteer opportunities. I found the listings to be well categorized and written and the book to be an inspiring read over all. In terms of a single-volume jumping off point to inspire potential volunteers into service, this is an excellent guide. My only complaint might be that the information about traveling is a bit basic for a seasoned traveler, but maybe its designed for younger people volunteering before college. Overall, highly recommended.

Great little handbook,

This review is from: Volunteer: A Traveler's Guide to Making a Difference Around the World (Lonely Planet) (Paperback)
This little book is a great acquisition, it's compact, has information about organizations all over the world that have this kind of programs, each organization has a summary about the organization it self, costs, requirements and another useful information.
I haven't gone anywhere yet, but I think this book is a great tool to explore your options !

About this guide,
This review is from: Lonely Planet Volunteer: A Traveller's Guide to Making a Difference Around (General Reference) (Paperback)
This is a great guide for who want to help others and give themselves a cause to support, but the only problem is that the words are so small they had so much information to give, instead of expanding the book they squeezed it into this book that fits in your back pocket.

A 'must' for any would-be travel volunteer or libraries catering to travelers,

VOLUNTEER: A TRAVELLER'S GUIDE TO MAKING A DIFFERENCE AROUND THE WORLD provides a fine, user-friendly survey arranged by type of volunteer program and helps travelers develop a more meaningful travel experience. From planning either a short- or a long-term travel volunteer experience to outlines of websites, jobs, eligibility, and costs, this is, quite simply, a 'must' for any would-be travel volunteer or libraries catering to travelers.

Volunteer Lonely Plant A Guide to Volunteering around the world,

This review is from: Lonely Planet Volunteer: A Traveller's Guide to Making a Difference Around (General Reference) (Paperback)
The print is very small.....you almost need a magnifying glass to read some of the information. I love Lonely Plant books for travel but this one was not what I expected. Most of the info focus's on info for folks from the UK. I would not buy this one again for a gift unless I bought a huge magnifying glass to go with it!

loved this guide! very complete and useful! not only it gives input on every single aspect of what to do to have a successful volunteer experience abroad but it also gives you ideas of what volunteer organizations are out there for you to choose.
I cant wait to put it into use!

get your magnifying glasses,

Three reasons for the low rating:
1) there are 272 pages of very very small print. If you buy this book, also buy a magnifying glass. 2) half the pages use a san serif typeface, which makes the reading dreadfully slow going. (Sans serif typeface is the one that does not have the small features called "serifs" at the end of strokes. The conventional wisdom is that serifs help guide the eye along the lines in large blocks of text. Certainly Lonely Planet should know this...) 3) The white pages with black print are slightly easier to read than the green, greenish/beige, black, red or pink pages. This book is laborious to read. Had I actually seen the book before ordering it online, I never ever would have purchased it. I gave this book two stars rather than one because it does have valuable content. |
