From School Library Journal
Grade 5 Up-Political Campaign is a road map for the process of combining volunteer work with the social-sciences curriculum. Political activism of all kinds, from working for a certain candidate to working to end national problems are discussed. The description of how a student hosted a successful Candidates Night is fairly thoroughly examined in three pages. In Seniors, actual service-learning programs demonstrate successful and innovative teen efforts across the country. While individual stories reflect how these young people personally benefited from their service, there are no direct quotes from the teens involved. Both books cover many of the obvious as well as subtle benefits of such projects. "Fast Fact" boxes, lists of definitions, bibliographies, indexes, and further resources sections are clear and comprehensive. With the ever-increasing push for teens to perform community-service hours in order to graduate, these slim titles are exceedingly useful and unique.
