Bottom line: a useful book, within limits, for modelers and historians. For non-German speakers/readers the pictures (not seen elsewhere) and plans are worth the price.
I was a bit disappointed in the plan drawings (Pages 59-68 of a 68 page book); there weren't enough of them (plans for U-505, as captured, are absent but, can be pieced together). Also, they must be viewed with a magnifier or, "blown up" on a copier. What was published is useful, such as the 20mm AA (single and 4 barrel - vierling) guns, 37mm AA guns, Attack - Search periscopes, and "Schnorchel" (snorkel). There is mention, by the same authors, of another publication: "Planrolle Uboottyp IX C" (Plan sheaf(s) / Building plans U-boat type IXC) "ISBN" 3-7637-6006-7." This would be a good German to English translation project. There is not enough information on this larger class of U-boat. |
