A very well written book by respected automotive writer Pat Ganahl. It is the life and work of the interesting and slightly crazy early auto paint striper Von Dutch. Includes some great photographs. If you are interested in old school automotive customizing I would recomend this book.

The pictures of the book are awesome. Von Dutch is truly talented and this book tells you the history behind the artwork. If you are a car lover and an artist it is the perfect book for you. Reading the history and motivation behind such designs is great.

Pat Ganahl has taken a very difficult subject, by the name of "Von Dutch" aka Kenneth Howard into a collage of history, photos and stories. There are many people who claim to have "known Von Dutch" [1929-1992]. Most just "used" him and his "reputation."
The most important photo of the book is on page 171 (lower right), taken by Pat in Dutch's final years. . . Kenneth Howard could be compared to Da Vinci in many ways, he was an excellent craftsman who loved to "put people on."

This will be short but I love the book it gave me a bit of insight into the mind and life of Kenneth Howard. What he accomplished. He and Ed Roth are basically responsible for the T-shirt and pin striping craze that has swept the world.Great book.

Generally well done, but not the most polished prose style. A bit of insight into the California car culture of the 60s and 70s, and info on one of the oddest folks in the custom-rod business. For me, a bit 'o nostalgia - I had a friend with a von Dutch paint job - neato.

This book is a solid introduction to von Dutch, whether or not one is familiar with the legend. The work spotlights a specific time in the life of the artist, and manages to also uncover some history of the enigma that is von Dutch. This book is a fascinating recount of an historic summer and is a valuable addition to any motorsports library.

I very good and well researched account of the days of early custom car hot rods. Von Dutch was truly an artist of the highest quality. Very little custom, hand painted designs are being done today. Informative and entertaining. Numerous illustrations of von Dutch's work on both custom and race vehicles.

"WHY SPOIL A GOOD STORY WITH THE TRUTH!?" (Dutch's favorite saying about writers.)
Well...the pictures are great, but there are way too many contradictions.....the author admitedly confesses the truth being hard to come by.Well then....WHY THIS BOOK!? |
