Editorial Reviews

Chicago saxophone legend Von Freeman took his working band to Europe for a triumphant appearance at Jazzfest Berlin, Halloween night, 2002. This recording contains the complete performance of his New Apartment Lounge Quartet from that evening. Festival artistic director John Corbett described the performance as 'a stunning toboggan ride of a concert, bringing some of the funky intimacy of the Chicago club to the German city'. He added 'Over the course of four long pieces, Freeman established his authority without question'. The four extended performances here reveal the mature Freeman at his best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superior Performance by Underappreciated Tenor Master November 20, 2009
Format:Audio CD
This superior 2002 concert performance by Von Freeman is well recorded and features four long tracks, two originals and two standards. There are no weak tracks--all predominately feature Mr. Freeman's unique tenor sound on an unwaveringly inspired night, backed by a fine Chicago group. I might have thought before hearing this recording, that I never needed to hear a new version of Summertime again; however, Von Freeman has proven me to be oh so wrong. Assuredly one of the best releases of 2009.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rare Eloquence September 1, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Vonski's version of "Darn that Dream" here is one of his stand-out interpretations - Freeman took that jazz standard and transformed it into just pure, blaring grief. It is an incredible performance, and the CD is worth buying for that one track - and everything else here is as amazing. An essential jazz performance.
