The external IR device works alright up to 15-20 feet as long as you keep the line of sight with the receiver. The problem I have with the Voomote is not the actual external device but the App that supports it.
First off there is a limited number of brands and models that come with the App. Of my four receivers only 2 were listed. It was very time intensive to setup custom buttons and there is no blank template.
Second negative is the ability to share your layouts and settings (which initially takes along time to setup) with other Apple devices. It makes no-sense to have to repeat the process again if I decide to switch from my iPhone to my iPad or any other device. There should be a way for App users to share and download remotes with others.
The bottom line is the external device transmits to the receiver alright, BUT the App needs some major improvements. Particularly on the time intensive setup and the ability to share remote designs with others.

Voomote.tv, Zero1.tv, and zeroone.tv (all the URLs referred to in their product documentation and within the iOS app for support) do not exist. Requests for their webpages return unresolved. Apparently the company is gone which implies support for it and it's iOS app is also gone.

Husband loves it
I bought this for my husband and with in minuets he had it open and was progaming it for all our TV's. He enjoys turning the kids TV on and off behind them.

LIARS- product does not work on iTouch
Plugged in, ran it, says you need iOS5 to run it. Odd, I have an L5 remote dongle that works just fine on my itouch. This thing is GARBAGE.
