An Amazingly Weird Collection o' Tunes,
By Uncle Mike "Uncle Mike" (Aliso Viejo, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Voobaha (Audio CD)
Okay, yeah, this has Fish Heads, but there is so much more to this album. First album by Mr. Mumy and Mr. Haimer, my favorite songs on here are the lesser-known ones: Linoleum, Cemetary Girls, Boogie Woogie Amputee, along with the very early rarities High School Gym and Three Drunk Newts. Clip Clop is also fun. I've taught it to some of the youngsters I know. And there are some Korean students in Pusan who know Fish Heads now...hehehe...

What can I say? This album's a classic. Fish heads is engrained in my soul and is a cultural phenonemon like bagels and cream cheese. Although I do hate sushi I love Fishheads. Clip Clop is great for kids. Party in my Pants is a great sing along, I once asked Art and Artie what does"Voobanehanabaha" mean. I still don't know but I'm guessing it means something like"cool or awesome" and High School Gym,the one I'm guest vocalist on was done in "one take" in Artie's living room.I thought maybe I should have done it over, but they thought it sounded great and natural on the first take. That was years ago when I was finishing college and had my first teaching job as a teacher. I had to keep my comedy career with risque songs like High School Gym kindof hush hush during my teaching. It was like I was living 2 personalities. Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde. The sweet, innocent one by day, and the sinful, crazy one at night. But truly, buy the CD, because it is really great even decades later. It never gets old and everyone can get into at least one of their songs as well as their pants..(party) hee hee heee! I love you Art and Artie. Love always, Sulu( HIgh School Gym, Gotta Get a Fake ID.)

A must-have for all Barnes & Barnes (and/or Dr. Demento) fans. Contains several tracks not on the original LP, including alternate versions of some tracks. Good liner notes by Bill Mumy about the genesis of the band and production of the tracks.

Most of my exposure to this band is, of course, through the Dr. Demento show. But there's something about Art and Artie Barnes that make my toes tap while I laugh. "Party in My Pants" is the ultimate dance song, "Linoleum" is a ponderous oddity that is nonetheless quite catchy, and "Cemetary Girls" is a creepy Halloween love song you definitely don't want the trick-or-treaters to hear.Looking for a different kind of music to listen to in the car? Give "Voobaha" a try. You may be pleasantly surprised - and definitely amused.

Barnes & Barnes are best known for their "hit" song "Fish Heads", which is the most requested song of all time on the Dr. Demento show. After that song gained some notoriety, they got a contract to record this album. And what an album it is! It features some of the strangest songs ever recorded (plus the most twisted Beatles cover version ever). Most of these songs are in questionable taste, but I like them. The CD version adds a whopping nine bonus tracks to the original album. Fans of demented music, unite and buy this CD! Yeah!

like many others, i was first exposed to Barnes & Barnes by the Dr. Demento show. the song "fish Heads" fascinated me in it's sheer audacity to commit such a strange and stupid song to tape. it became my quest to find this recording. many years passed and it was hard to get ahold of. then one night i went to go see Atom and His Package and on his merch table he was selling some bargain bin cd's for one dollar. lo and behold, there was "Voobaha" just waiting for my grubby little hands. i had forgoten about some of the other funny songs on this cd like "Boogie Woogie Amputee" and there are plenty more. this is weird goofy silly music that would appeal to fan of They Might Be Giants' earlier work or maybe even the Dead Milkmen. quirky, funny, and slightly offensive...a true classic of outsider music.

Barnes and Barnes' "Voobaha" has got to be one of the stupidest albums to be considered a classic. And that's a good thing.Delightfully humorous and quirky, there's not a weak track among the bunch, considering most of these were made on four track recorders. The instrumentation is nothing short of godly, accented by the pitch-shifted vocals and the weird arrangements. Pre-dates Ween and Danielson Famile, but the influence that B&B give them is clearly present.

this is not a very good cd worth buying, it is worth buying for 10 or 15 dollors but not too expensive, If you are a Weird Al Yankovic fan this is a good rare item al plays accordian in some songs and one of the first things in his work...
