I found this at a Tower records listening station and was hooked. Her voice is incredible. It's earthy and warm but has a smoothness that is great for listening to while you lounge around.

I completely agree with the first reviewer. This has an older, sophisticated sound, but still manages to sound modern and fresh.
I took a chance on this when I came across it at my local Barnes & Noble under the "new and notable" section. Is this ever notable. Jackie Joyces' voice is a thing of beauty, not entirely unlike Macy Gray's voice, who I am a big fan of, but with a more mature and polished sound (clearer and less drug-hazed sounding - sorry Macy). I absolutely love the song "Angel City" as well. As soon as I sampled that song, I knew the CD was for me. Other standouts for me include "Jakarta Flatline", "Rivermouth", and "This Far Out". A few I liked less than others, but it was a great all around listening experience and I have gone back to this CD more than a few times. I would highly recommend giving this a listen. You won't be disappointed.

Mix Billie Holiday, Eartha Kitt and late-night grooves...,

... and you'll get Helicopter Girl's latest release. I just got this album last night and fell in love with the title track "Angel City" on the first listen... Jackie Joyce (aka Helicopter Girl) has a unique voice reminiscent of older singers like Eartha Kitt and Billie Holiday. There is an interesting blend of musical styles here. It's sexy, after-hours music that has both interesting lyrics and an interesting blend of musical styles and instrumentation. I can't say that I love every cut, but it's nice to hear something different and unique, a bit avant-garde, yet classy without being down-right unlistenable. Take a chance and give Helicopter Girl a whirl-- I think (and hope) you'll be glad (as I was) that you did!

This is even better than her first album, 'How to Steal the World'. Pure aural pleasure. If you like Bjork, Keli Ali or Portishead then place a chance on this!

The sounds of blues in a smoky piano bar. Her sound is unique & she is a must to try. Haunting melodies & voice. Poetic, almost like a e.e Cummings. Check her out on You Tube to get a flavor.

I had never heard of Hellicopter Girl until a LJ friend put up the video for it. Cool....I thought. Kind of like Eartha Kitt meets Macy Grey. Anyway I liked this so much, I purchased it. I couldn't hear it on Amazon, but I thought I would take a chance. Her voice gets a bit wonky, 'cause it's not that strong. But phrasing, pitch just terrific. And just for the heck of it, wonky voice and all, better then Eartha Kitt and Macy Grey.

Then you really should check out Joyce's work with Mouth Music. Joyce took over the writing helm for two of their albums, and they are both outstanding.

A friend of mine found this while rummaging through some stuff at work, he then told me I should buy it because it looked interesting.
The cover art was very interesting, and the title, "Voodoo Chic" was interesting as well. So...I bought it. I am very happy at this point that I did. This album is nothing short of amazing. The lyrics are clever, sometimes don't make sense, but are very cool, spanning a variety of cultures and history. The singer's vocals are what really make the album. They are slightly dark, jazzy and husky (a little bit like Macy Gray, but nowhere near as harsh). Her voice effortlessly flows through each song. The music itself is kind of trip-hoppy. Very cool stuff, very chill and relaxing. Filled with electronic beats, some guitars and all sorts of sound effects which go along with the lyrics in the song. Really really really good stuff. Highly reccomended. |
