Editorial Reviews

Voodoo Moon speaks clearly to this band s history, and the future of what great artists can do. Kim Simmonds woodsheds like a journeyman, always reaching for higher ground. He can be found in his own backyard White Cottage studio most every morning when Savoy Brown is not on the road. Simmonds is constantly writing songs and working on his playing, both electric and acoustic. He has taken to solo performances since 1997, which is one the greatest of artistic challenges. He has also been painting since 2001, which gives him another creative challenge. But most of all, Simmonds challenges himself to continually be a living artist!

I'm old--and there is some Circus magazine that lists Kim Simmonds as a choice for "best guitraist." I circled his name. I was probably seventeen years old. He wrote "Lost and Lonely Child" Wow! Listen to the guitar work on "Hellbound Train." And then there was the Yolden era. So...what about "Voodoo Moon"? Well, I loved "Steel"--and I really like Kim's voice. This may be better than the other Savoy Brown releases through the years. Kim stretches out in the title track. That's worth the price of admission. Joe Whiting adds vocals. Yeah. It's another great Savoy Brown album. Just listen to Kim play--five stars because they don't make albums like this any more. Enjoy the honest music.

We've all been there. You find yourself at a live performance and the the band plays some great sounding new material. As soon as it's released, you buy it. Many times you can't believe the songs are the same ones you heard because of studio polish or added horns or strings or myriad other things that can ruin great songs. Well...there are a few non-intrusive horns to be heard here, but they don't spoil the smokin' Blues vibe. Late last summer I caught Savoy Brown at a sparsely attended, mosquito infested, but otherwise awesome music festival in Freeport, Illinois. Kim Simmonds mentioned their upcoming album and proceeded to blaze through quite a few of the tracks. So often the new songs are a letdown when sandwiched in between older, more familiar stuff. Not these new songs. They fit in seamlessly alongside their elder brethren and the show smoked from start to finish. So now we get our hands on the album. Disappointment? Hell No! It's more like amazement. This is a really good album, carved from the same stone that built the bands reputation as a killer rockin' blues band. The songs I remember from the show are excellent. The ones they didn't play are as good or better and the overall sound is really good. A "must have" for the Savoy Brown fan and the rest of us old farts who like our music "meat and potatoes style".....Get It.

Savoy Brown has long been one of my favorite bands. Going back to the Sixties, their musicianship and understanding of the music that they came to represent was deep and well learned. The new album, Voodoo Moon has been a long time coming, but it was well worth the wait. Kim Simmonds guitar playing has never been better and the group as a whole is sounding better than they have in years also.
While I have enjoyed all of their albums over the years, I feel that Voodoo Moon is probably their best effort since Kings Of Boogie. You will not be disappointed in this album.

A limit on what you will do, puts a limit on what you can do. I think Savoy Brown would agree with that. The Savoy Brown Blues Band, are a British blues rock band, formed in 1965, in Battersea, South West London. They have 34 albums. They are known for non-stop touring. Their highest topping album was Hellbound Train (1972) which landed on the charts at #34. They have sold millions of albums worldwide yet remain out of the public spotlight for the most part.
Undeterred, Savoy Brown led by guitarist Kim Simmonds, the only remaining original member, have recently cranked out Voodoo Moon.
Although the boys come from across the pond their records and concerts have always done better in the United States. Their shows still regularly pass the two-hour mark with Kim jocking across the stage churning out some the best blistering blues guitar in the business.
If you're a baby-boomer like me and remember Savoy Brown fondly from the late 60s to early 70s, I would highly recommend Voodoo Moon. I think it's some of their strongest material in years.
Kim agrees, "I believe the songs on Voodoo Moon are the best I've written since the early 70s. It is modern blues rock but with more song orientation than normally associated with the genre."
The reason he has such control on this modern blues rock is he's been performing for over 45 years. That experience can't help but shine through.
"My motivation is to reach for that spirit I had as a young boy,"'Kim said. "I think that's always good to hold on to. Constantly practicing, writing and playing live -- raw, naked in a sense -- brings
creativity and perspective, as well as inspiration."
I think Kim found that spirit especially with "Shockwaves," "Natural Man" and the title cut "Voodoo Moon."
You can hear the band's love of what they do -- blues rock, and it will be some of the best you've heard in a while.
