Ugly but efficient,

I hate the design. It takes up a fair amount of floor space, and to turn the fan, you have to move the base and fan together. Overall, I'm pleased with my Vornado. It puts out more wind than a Southern politician, and it's nearly silent on low speed. I can't complain about a bit more noise at higher speeds, because I seldom need to turn it above "low" when I'm in the room with it. It will put a nice breeze through my den and kitchen on "medium", and "high" speed seems almost pointless unless you're in a stadium. 5 Stars for the fan. 2 Stars for the designer.

Adjustable height a bit deceiving,

I incorrectly assumed that the height was adjustable between 27 and 42". Rather, you install an attachment to raise the unit to 42", and it cannot rest at heights in-between 27" and 42". Also, the design has a strange forward-pushing design which I find awkward to position.

It's only "whisper quiet" when on the lowest setting...,

...and that's my main beef. You may have seen my other review of the Vornado 510 model. A few days after getting the 510 I called Vornado customer service about some questions I had. One nice thing I learned from the rep was that the top of the line model 785 was supposedly available at Sam's Club for only $62 (as opposed to $110 online or whatever retail store you might find it at). Luckily I have a local Sam's Club and sure enough, they had them for $62 so I bought one.In my review of the 510, my main complaint was that although quiet on its lowest setting, it didn't move enough air. The 785 moves more air, but unfortunately I had the same problem another reviewer had with a Vornado model 750 - that being the sound of the motor humming. Very annoying. And with this fan being much larger than the 510, the sound of the fan on its highest setting... well, let me put it this way: turn it on high, sit back and close your eyes, and you'll think you're taxiing down the runway at some old airfield in a 1 propeller plane. As I said in the other review, I can't imagine anyone sleeping with the fan on high, or having company over and trying to have a conversation with it whizzing away in the background, it's much too loud. Bottom line, despite it being almost 50% off the retail price at Sam's, I STILL returned it and got my money back. For value, I have to give it only 2 stars. I'm not an engineer, but I do have an engineering background, and I believe that if you want to move a lot of air quietly, you need a fan with a large diameter blade. I recently broke my 10 year old oscillating stand fan. There was nothing spectacular about it, but it did have a pretty large blade on it, and on its low setting it moved a decent amount of air quietly. I'm off to find another.
