Product Description

The 173 Whole Room Tower Circulator offers a more effective way to circulate air with V-Flow Circulation. Uniquely contoured air outlets create a wide span of constant airflow, without the need for oscillation. Typical tower fans oscillate due to limited range of air movement. You feel the airflow for only seconds at a time. With V-Flow Circulation, a high volume of air is continuously moving throughout the room, creating quiet, comfortable Whole Room Circulation. The 173 features a remote control that magnetically cradles at the top of the unit, so the remote is always in reach. 3 Speed settings, selected by push-button controls, allow you to tailor the airflow perfectly for your needs. The 173 Tower Circulator includes a 1, 2, 4, or 8 hour timer ensures you run you operate in an energy-saving, efficient way. Vornado has eliminated the wobbly base found on oscillating tower fans in favor of a solid and sturdy system that stands the test of time. Like all Vornado Whole Room Circulators, the 173 is backed by an industry-leading 5 year warranty. Model is made for 120 volts only.

Although only three reviews are in at this point, they are all five star and I couldn’t agree more! This fan is so amazingly ideal that I wonder why there aren’t more on the market. This is a quiet, highly effective method of cooling and circulating air through a room. The remote control is the cherry on top. It was a breeze to assemble (within five minutes it was up and running) and it truly is quiet. It’s not silent, you’ll hear it, but in comparison to those noise oscillating annoyances, this thing will seem like a church mouse.

The design is sleek and actually attractive by standing fan standards. The distribution of air is even and pleasant without the periodic whoosh of cool air that disappears for another twenty second before returning to tease you. The bottom line with this is the price. This product proves the adage that you get what you pay for about as well as anything I’ve ever owned. Yes, it is expensive, probably a good 3x or more than you’d pay for a competitor's oscillating room fan at a department store. Is it worth it? Do you want a fan that really does perform as well as you could ever imagine? Also, for those who would like a similar Vornado product, a quick Google search showed that they do offer lower priced models of the same design at various retail stores.

Here in the Texas summer, ceiling fans are just not enough, so, for years, I've put up with a noisy and all too ugly floor tower fan. Now it's permanently banned to the garage. With my new Vornado 173 room tower, I'm living with quiet air circulation. What a relief!

Once out of its package, the Vornado is almost ready to go but not quite. To finish it and make it ready for duty, the base must be installed. Easy enough, once you've located the screws which are located in the styrofoam packing material. Then locate and insert the little battery in the circular remote control. Plug in the room tower, and you're ready to enjoy quiet air circulating throughout the room.

I keep mine in the bedroom where I can laze in bed while controlling the air with the remote. Ahhhh.

The sleek look of the tower is a pleasure, especially when I realize I no longer have to trip over my old tower, so big it was never quite out of the way.

I highly recommend this Vornado. A pleasurable replacement for older, much uglier, towers.

FIVE STARS!

UPDATE: April 4, 2014

Having used this fan in my bedroom for a couple of weeks, I couldn't be more delighted. It's very quiet and moves the air in the room unnoticeably. It's a pleasure to come into the room and feel fresh air without wind. I could not be happier and recommend this fan to everyone who wants to enjoy fresh air in a closed room.

I have quite a few Vornados in my house, including an older model of this Tower fan which I believe I picked up from Woot somewhere along the way. The tower fans are interesting because they have a small window of direct airflow, so if you're the type who likes to have the air blasting directly on you, this isn't a great model to pick up. However, if you like the feeling of the air moving around but without the constant feeling of wind on your skin, this is probably more your style.

The first thing I noticed is the tower fan only has three settings for power - low/med/high. At the highest setting, the fan is pretty noisy - I would say that it's pretty close to some of the lower settings on my old floor model Vornados, but the low and medium settings are relatively quiet. The 173 is touted as a "whole room circulator," but I'm not quite sure that's accurate. In one of my home's smaller bedrooms, I stuck the unit in a corner and did the very scientific "toilet paper on a stick" test, simply taping a single-ply piece of toilet paper to a stick and seeing if it moved. The Vornado has about a 40-45 degree window of air movement, and outside of that, the air was pretty still. The general air current was probably strong enough to just "move the air," but the wind speed isn't strong enough to give the impression that a fan was on. In fact, if you ranged outside of that small arc, the toilet paper wouldn't even flutter. However if you walked straight back from the "front" of the tower, the air could be felt at least 20ft away.

The tower isn't a bad unit, and the addition of the remote is a very nice touch (the remote uses a standard CR2032 "button" battery), however I think I still prefer the older floor models. As far as their footprint is concerned, it's honestly negligable. When you assemble the base onto the tower fan, its footprint is about the same as my floor model - maybe 20% smaller.

I'll cut to the chase. This is one great fan. Looking at it I was skeptical. It doesn't oscillate & it just isn't that big. How could it work for my entire living room. Well, I'll be the first to admit I was wrong. I don't completely understand the technology behind it but you can feel the movement of air throughout the room & even into the dining room. On top of that it's a lot quieter than my old whole room fan & since there are no huge blades twirling around it's a lot safer around children. we are an in home preschool/daycare & I feel this is safe enough for us to use. Before we could only use our fan after the children had left for the day, Now it can be on all afternoon. Highly recommended.
