I like that the author sounds grandfatherly and tells his story. I understand the white man over ran the Native Americans and that was wrong - and so are the reservations - but the author has seems to have some "poor me" victim thinking and increasingly bitter remarks throughout the book. Wasn't our favorite story, but nice to hear from a Native American's perspective

I read this book aloud with my children.

This book is nonfiction. It is the story of the Plains Indians told by William White Buffalo, a Northern Cheyenne Native American. Most of what he tells is about the Montana Indians, but applies also to nearly all Indians of the Plains.

Some of things that we learned included who the Plains Indians are and where they came from, where and how they live, foods they eat, their education (past and present), and religious beliefs and practices. William White Buffalo relates the information in such a way that is interesting and easy to understand.

We loved this book! I highly recommend including this book in your studies of Native Americans.

MY RATING: 5 stars!! Loved it!!

So much to learn from this book! William White Buffalo tells of life as a plains Indian, as told to him by his grandfather who lived it. Fascinating!

This short piece of non-fiction is a good "insider" view of Native American / Plains Indian life. The writer makes no attempts to hide his bias, and this makes for a good lesson in teaching point-of-view. Although sketch maps are included in the b/w illustrations, it is better to look up the places White Buffalo discusses online. From there one can get a current view of "life on the ground" in the 21st century Plains Indian world.
