2.0 out of 5 stars 'The Sweet' Didn't Rock In Vain, October 31, 2001

Bjorn Clasen (Rolléngergronn, Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, Europe) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Magoo is an interesting rock band which I'm close to call avantgarde... if it wasn't for the clear 1970s inspiration.

Mostly, it's pure rock'n'roll, spiced up with klichéic synths and effects. A very significant example is the speedy 'The Spectre Closes In'.

Often, like on 'Implicate The Targets', Magoo sounds a lot like The Sweet - same high-pitch voice, same 1970-like synths ore distorted guitars, and same power-rocking melody. 'Acid Goldbar' seems very The Sweet-inspired too.

The sound and chorus of 'Swiss Border Escape' seem like a step even a little further back in time, like late 1960s or very early 1970s.

'Pink Dust' also starts out as a 1960s'ish song, especially the vocals. However, the very wisely arranged interludes make this one of the best songs on the album.

On the short intro and title song as well as on 'Get On It Superhero', Magoo's sound is more modern. The keys are more balanced, the vocals more mild.

The most interesting song on 'Vote The Pacifist Ticket Today' is the closing act 'Airmen Afraid', a floating and rather pleasant journey into the melodical basis of Magoo.

In brief, it looks as if The Sweet didn't rock in vain...
