Review

Praise for Jessa Slade's Seduced by Shadows:
''Slade's debut presents a dark and dense supernatural conflict with high stakes. [A] rich crossover urban fantasy.'' -- Publishers Weekly
''Seduced by Shadows is wonderfully addictive!'' --Gena Showalter, New York Times bestselling author --This text refers to the MP3 CD edition.

About the Author

Jessa Slade spent her childhood chore money on science fiction and fantasy and aspires to someday write about FTL unicorns. She is a hopeless cynic who secretly believes the flow of the universe can be positively altered by a well-told love story. The hard rains of the Pacific Northwest and the quest for the perfect extended metaphor keep her chained at her computer.

More About the Author

Despite a grade school career aptitude test that indicated farming would be her best bet, Jessa always knew she wanted to be a writer. Her early works include "MY POMES," a poetry chapbook rampant with unicorns and misspellings, and, later, a torrid teen cowboy romance which her editor-mother asked her to revise and resubmit, changing the love scene to "soul mates."

Now she writes paranormal romance, urban fantasy romance, and science fiction romance. Basically, anything with explosions AND kisses!

Just like computer hackers, Evil always seems to be one step ahead of Good.

I met the author and bought this book, but I just couldn't quite wrap my head around it so I put it down.

As part of a complex series it is best to have read at least one of the prior books.

I'd forgotten how much I love this series (once you get past all the confusing 't' terms: Talyan,Teshuva .... good thing there is a glossary) I like the possessed warriors with the damaged souls who find a mate to fill in the holes. This time the pairing is a crippled former missionary, Jonah, and Nim, the stripper with her own scars. And I was surprised that even though the heroine strikes out on her own to face danger and certain death on several occassions, she did it without coming across as 'too stupid to live'.

Sometimes when I really like a book it is hard to articulate why, this time I think the reason is that it is all the details, and the depth of the characterization for the heroine Nim that made the story so good, but hard to talk about. Surprisingly, as a stripper Nim is already a warrior, she uses her body and sensuality - ala Eve and complete with snake - as a weapon against men. I like that in this series the females are warriors too. And a scene or two here show that all the women (Nim and the past heroines) are indeed a force to be reckoned with - an almost apocalytic one, without their mates to temper their combined power.

So now I can't wait for the next one, By Darkness Undone, though I am a bit disappointed that Ecco isn't getting his story yet and Slade is bringing in a new pair for the next books. What I'd really like to see in the future though is a demon possessed warrior women with the angel Cyril Fane - he's a contradicting mess of stick-up-the-behind with a hidden sense of humor and a hot car. Since this series builds on the characters from previous stories, I think it might be better for readers new to the series to start with the first book Forged of Shadows: A Novel of the Marked Souls.

Format: Mass Market Paperback
Missionary man Jonah Walker lost everything when he was possessed by a demon. He's spent his immortal life fighting the relentless battle against evil. In his last fight he lost a vital part of himself and started questioning his existence. Now duty calls him to train a newly demon-possessed woman, but he's not sure he's up for the challenge, for he has nothing left to offer.

Nim "Naughty Nymphette" Hamlin spends her nights stripping for money. She's positive the world's not worth saving. However, when she attracts the attention of a demon and a saint, she's thrust into a world she never knew existed. She's irresistibly drawn to Jonah, but isn't willing to give him more than no strings attached sex. But as danger surrounds them, they both have to face the mistakes of their past so they can come together to save the future.

This is book 3 in the Marked Souls series and I recommend reading them in order, as each story builds upon things that happen in the previous books. This book opens with a scorching hot meeting between the two main characters and doesn't stop burning up the pages until the end. I loved the polarization between a missionary turned demon hero and a stripper heroine. They balanced each other well as they explored the ideals of good versus evil, redemption and forgiveness. Ms. Slade isn't afraid to break out of the mold of the pure and innocent heroine and gives us a character with depth, flaws and conflicted feelings in Nim.

This is a multifaceted, dark and sober book. The characters aren't perfect and it's not clear cut what makes someone good or bad. The main characters have inner battles waging as well as the overarching war with a demon trying to destroy the veil between worlds and unleash unspeakable evil. Romance weaves in and out of the intense and intriguing plot lines and provides a brief respite of hope to the characters and readers alike. If you want a thought provoking read, this is a series not to be missed.

Format: Mass Market Paperback
When Jonah Walker was mortal he was a dedicated missionary doing the Lord's work. However, the pious Jonah has become immortal after a stint with a demon; but he finds his world filled with anger and violence. His biggest issue with adapting to his change is he misses his beloved wife and other family members as he welcomes death that can never come.

In Chicago Nim "Naughty Nymphette" Hamlin entered the underworld not of her own fruition as she never believed such a realm existed. She struggles with adapting her battered belief system that scoffed at demons existing to a new reality, but apparently she has enthralled one of them. As for Jonah the righteous, she knows she will never be his equal nor will she ever be his partner except in a battle against evil.

The latest Marked Souls urban romantic fantasy stars two compassionate flawed protagonists; each struggling with a radically different reality than what they believed for most of their lives. The story line is filled with action, but driven by the lead couple who at that first look were unsure whether heaven or hell took over their heart. Though a glossary and a Possession classification are included, to better understand the scope of the Slade Shadows saga readers should start with the previous entries in the mythos (see Forged of Shadows and Seduced of Shadows).

Vowed in Shadows by Jessica Slade
Paranormal Romance -April 5th, 2011
4 stars

Vowed in Shadows is the third book in the Marked Souls series. As part of a complex series it is best to have read at least one of the prior books.

Jessica Slade quickly jumps into action with a surprisingly sensual opening as the heroine, a stripper tries to seduce the hero!! In this series, demons who want to repent possess special humans and give them supernatural powers. Each of the demons has a different power and these demons want to work towards doing good deeds.

In this story, the wounded hero, Jonah was a religious man before his life changed dramatically. Since then, he merely exists for his duty. This changes when he is assigned to help a young woman named Nim. Nim is a stripper with a scarred past. She is intrigued by the man who has been constantly watching her and hopes to `play' him for money. But what she doesn't realize is that Jonah is here to help guide her transition. For a demon has targeted her for possession. They soon discover although they are seemingly opposites they are actually well matched and Nim is Jonah's mate. Together they can become a powerful team if each can open up to each other and let their wounds heal.

This was a solid story and I loved idea of demons that possess humans. Nim is a very earthy woman confident in her sexuality but still vulnerable inside. She doesn't believe in love or fairy tales. I couldn't relate to her as much as the sexy hero. But she is integral to Jonah. Jonah has kept all his emotions bottled up inside and needs someone like the outrageous Nim to bring them out. They balance each other well as his dependability is a contrast to Nim's unstable past. I liked how Jonah seemed like a rock.
