A new Lavyrle Spencer fan!,
By inkypink (Malaysia) - See all my reviews

After finishing "Vows", I can honestly say that I am now a bonafide Lavyrle Spencer fan. Before this book I wasn't too sure because I'd read 2 great books and 1 OK book, but this sure clinched it! I immensely loved the character of Emily, she was strong & smart and I loved how she analysed things (her feelings for Charles, Tom etc). It's a fairly 'typical' story where the hero & the heroine both hate each other (with a nuclear force in this story) and then eventually fall in love. It does have an interesting twist with the fiance, friendships and a side-story about how Emily's father, Edwin and her mother made a similar mistake of choosing duty over love/passion in their lives. Tom Jeffcoat was just another one of Lavyrle Spencer's perfect leading man. Loved the interactions (verbal sparring) between Tom & Emily. If you liked this book, then I'd recommend that you pick up "The Gamble" (my ultimate favorite) or "The Hummingbird".

I couldnt put it down! I am an avid fan of L.S. and this has to be one of my new favorites. Separate Beds being my all time favorite book. This story only got better the deeper into the book you got. The way the characters respond to their feelings seems less contrived than a lot of the typical romances you will read. The closer you get to the finale, the better it gets! It has a suspense that reams you deeper into the story. A must read for anyone who loves a good story and likes to ride the wave of emotions only Lavyrle can put you on. READ IT !

This book was a great read! Normally, I don't like books about head-strong women, but Spencer did such a great job at showing Emily's soft side, especially when she took care of her mother. And the parts where Emily lost her temper with Tom were very entertaining. Even though this type of story is predictable, I enjoy novels where the couple start as adversaries and gradually fall in love throughout the course of the book. And anyone who loves caring for animals as much as Emily did is a real heroine as far as I'm concerned. I also liked reading about life in Wyoming in the 1800's, it reminded me a little of how much I enjoyed reading about Laura Ingalls Wilder when I was young. This is a great book to read if you just want to escape the realities of this time for a while.

I have read, reread, and read this book some more. It is one of my all time favorites! I recommend it to anyone and everyone that asks and even some that don't. It is the most read book in my home. I own almost everything written by LaVyrle. I cried the day she retired! Come on LaVyrle--just one more!

This is my absolute favorite book! I have read it many times and it has helped me get through my own bad times. You just have to love the women of Lavyrle Spencer. They are strong and independant for their time. Read Morning Glory, Years, Hummingbird and anything else she has written. I recommend her to all.......

Not Her Best But It's Still Good!,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Vows (Audio Cassette)
Lavyrle Spencer is one of my favorite writers and while I don't think of Vows as being her best book and I didn't hold on to it for my keeper shelf I did think it was a pretty good book full of good characters like Emily and Tom and Emily's family and friends but I do agree that her dorky friend Tarsi was very annoying. I would recommend Vows to fans of Lavryle Spencer who haven't read the book. I actually listened to the audio cassette which was read by Mary Crosby and I would recommend it to anyone who likes to listen to audio books. BTW: Mary Crosby is an actress and she played Kristen on Dallas and she is also the daughter of singer/actor Bing Crosby.

Hard to put down!,

Sweet, sweet love story! Definitely a keeper to revisit years to come. The setting is Wyoming, 1888. Tom is new in town, opening up a business of his own, just down the street from his competitor. Emily, the competitor's daughter is headstrong- tomboy describes her best, and doesn't like Tom right off because of the threat he is making to her family's business. The story goes deep, allowing you to really see her family for how they really are- her dying mother, her father who is trying to hold the family and business together, her aunt who comes to help the family handle death a little easier, the dingy girlfriend who is looking for a husband, and the fiancee who Emily has known since childhood and is more like a brother than lover. Sparks start to fly with Tom and Emily- both trying to deny them. Great story- several surprises. Sweet ending! You'll enjoy this one!

This is one of my favorite books. I have read this several times. The chemistry between Tom and Emily is electric and there is also a very well-written subplot about Josephine-Edwin-Fannie. It really tugs at the heartstrings. You not only care about the hero and heroine but the other characters as well such as Fannie, Edwin, Josephine, Frankie, and Charles.I just wish this talented author hadn't retired. I would have liked to have seen a love interest develop for Charles (maybe with Tarsy??) There would have been lots of opportunities for a sequel.

LaVyrle Spencer does wonders with this book. She makes you feel like YOU ARE Emily Walcott. Then she makes you feel like every other character. This book makes you happy, it makes you sad, it makes you laugh and it makes you cry. Most of all it makes you love. I give it a 10 ten times!! I would definently recommend this book to anyone.

My favorite LaVyrle Spencer book,

I love this book so much that I constantly pick it up and read over and over. Ever since I read this book, I've become a LaVyrle Spencer fan. She does such an amazing job of describing the characters and the two main characters are so perfect for each other. I could just imagine the love, devotion, and fascination for each other. Tom...*gasp*...sounds so hot and his pursuit of Emily and her love just did it for me. And Emily is such an independent and caring woman, not like alot of heroines who just grovel after the men. Beautiful book.
