4.0 out of 5 stars Could have been much better, April 15, 2001

This review is from: Vox / Into the Fire (Remixes) - Limited Edition 3 track EP (Audio CD)
As an avid Sarah fan owning all of her albums, I should say that almost every single CD of her deserve praise, even though including few songs. "Vox" is one of her perfect song if compared with the other old-stuff songs, very enigmatic and ambiguous yet brilliant lyrics, and melodious music decorated with those perfect guitars and piano. Unfortunately I'm talking of the original album version of the song, the remixes though beautiful but not as successful as the other Sarah mixes:

First comes the also in "Touch" included "Extended" version which is still cool with that additional percussions and backing vocals (Who is this singing "Why did you go and there you left my soul to bleed" at the very end of the song????..), but not satisfying. Secondly, another edited version of the song, the "Instrumental Dub" version which I had been listening for the first time hoped to be solaced by it, but as I was in the middle of the song, waiting for something that would give it more life, I realized that the track disappointingly lacked all those great musical elements that the original "Vox" had. I don't understand why they excluded the piano and the beautiful guitar! Anyway, I still wasn't pleased with the CD. But the last track, the extended version of "Into The Fire" made me change my mind. The music wasn't destroyed unlike in the remixes of Vox, in contrary, it was changed in a way that gave the song another sense- maybe a closer sense to the meaning of the song. The odd but interesting introduction and beat and the great vocals made it an almost perfect remix- even the most successful remix of Sarah, in my opinion.

If you are a big fan of Sarah and have collected other singles of her and maybe don't own the "Rarities & B-Sides" CD, I think it's worth to buy this single. If anyone interested, my higher recommendations are the singles INTO THE FIRE(!!) and SWEET SURRENDER.

4.0 out of 5 stars My first introduction to Sarah McLachlan, October 29, 2003

This review is from: Vox / Into the Fire (Remixes) - Limited Edition 3 track EP (Audio CD)
I have been an admirer of Sarah McLachlan since I was in high school (in other words, over a decade). I was first exposed to her on a local radio station and "Vox" was one of the first songs I had heard by Sarah at the time. This was before anyone had heard of Sarah because at the time she had only two albums out, "Touched" and "Solace". One of these days, I will get "Touched" because I want the original version of "Vox". Until then, I am contented with my copy of the single "Vox". "Vox" is one of the most beautiful songs that Sarah McLachlan has ever written. This was before her music got really drippy (see "Surfacing"). I am not really a big fan of dub mixes. I really wish that the original version of "Vox" was on the single and not the dub version. The extended remix is quite good though. Anyone who owns "Solace" knows that "Into the Fire" is on that cd. Here as a b-side, there is an extended remix version of the song. Just like the extended remix version of "Vox", nothing about the song has been drastically changed. You can obviously hear the changes but the song wasn't given a total makeover into some club-friendly remix. I definitely prefer the original version. Overall, "Vox" is a nice souvenir for diehard Sarah McLachlan fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Sarah Listening, April 1, 2001

The remixes of Vox are kind of corny, but Sarah's voice is beautiful and innocent. This single is more interesting than the singles from Fumbling Towards Ecstasy and Surfacing. This CD is not for the casual Sarah listener, but for someone who wants to hear Ms. McLachlan in her early days.
