The Debut Album to Own!,
By Jasper Mcworthy (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Voxtrot (Dig) (Audio CD)
These guys are amazing. I just picked this up based on a friend's recommendation and holy wow. By strategically avoiding all the pitfalls of what a first album can fall into, they do it masterfully. They also avoid the trends quite well, but delving into a very honed power pop rock sound that elevates your energy no matter what kind of mood you're in. However I get sad listening to it, because so much of the lyrics apply to situations going on in my life. But that's the reason I love it. It emotes me. It makes me feel the same thing. They're doing it with a meloncholy grace that in my opinion rivals the best Interpol song. They hail from Austin, Texas where if you don't know so many great and unique groups have come out of, here's a small list in case you're curious....
American Analog Set At the Drive In I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness Explosions in the Sky Spoon Bedhead The Black Angels Murder City Devils This is one of those albums that you will get through from start to finish and not skip a single track. It's unbelievably how perfected their sound is, that they've been working on it for a while and finally found where they belong on the soundscope. Get this if you enjoy Superdrag, Nada Surf or some of the best early nineties Brit Rock. Also I tend to never review anything that's less than five stars so if you read my reviews, you'll know this one's a winner.

The best album I've bought in a long time,

Fantastic indie pop. Some of the songs are instantly catching (like Firecracker, which I played almost non-stop for a day), and all the others without exception get better and better. Thoroughly recommended.

This has the ability to go mainstream, but hopefully it won't. For their first full-length album (released on the same record label that brings us the outstanding 'The National') Voxtrot doesn't disappoint. Hailing from Austin, they bring simple beautiful melodies, vocals, and (some) piano. A sound that might be compared to the likes of Death Cab, if thats your bag.
Notable tracks: Firecracker, Ghost, and Introduction

swell music,

like many people i am sure, i feel this is a highly talented group who has for the most part been over looked. that being said i know many people who have listened to their full length have noticed how catchy their music can be. these are the songs that attract and flash in your ears yet, what impressed me was the staying power some of the non flashy songs have. i think personally their best song here is Real Live Version. its slow and beautiful which shows a band who is just starting off that we as fans can take seriously and look forward to in the future. i get burned out on songs like firecracker, yet thankfully the cd comes through on other levels where we can return to the cd again and again and find new meaning on different tracks. that can never be overlooked.

Indie in its purest form,

This album is one of my favorites, I can listen to it over and over again. When you first listen to any Voxtrot song you might not like them, but listen to it over again. It's almost an acquired taste, but once you've taken in one song, every other songs sounds great! I suggest from this album "the future" and "real live version".

Indeed a Firecracker,

Sounds like a cross between Spoon and the Killers, but they don't rip off U2 like "Sam's Town" did. And they aren't as quirky (or creative?) as Spoon. Nevertheless, Voxtrot creates very catchy songs. With the highlights being "Firecracker" "Brother In Conflict" and "Kid Gloves" I can't remember a debut album from a band I have barely heard of sound so good. I enjoyed listening to this album multiple times and so I don't have any doubts that you will too.
