A group of 53 kidnapped Africans revolt on a slave ship in 1839, but they are recaptured and brought to trial. Are they men fighting for their freedom or are they property? The first victory of the Abolitionist movement has been documented with sparkling clarity in The Voyage of La Amistad. More than just a portrayal of a historical incident, this video brings the reality of the pre-emancipation period into painfully sharp focus, detailing the horrors of the "middle passage," and the dehumanizing man-as-property laws of the time. Alfre Woodard's narration is effective, and character voices are presented by Charles Durning and Brock Peters. The Voyage of La Amistad makes the perfect companion to Steven Spielberg's Academy Award-nominated Amistad, which brought this little-known incident to national attention in 1997. --Brendan J. LaSalle

I found this movie while doing research for a lesson plan. I found the movie totally engaging and was really interested in learning more about the Amistad. I have not seen the fiction version yet, but this factual version was great!
