5.0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Book, July 12, 2009

This review is from: Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea: The Complete Series Volume 1 (Hardcover)
This is a beautiful book. I purchased it the other day at a comic book store in Manhattan. I paid a lot more, I'm sorry I didn't get it here.
The book republishes the first six issues of the comic book based on the Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea tv series.(There will be a volume 2 coming out soon, as well.) Not only do you get the stories but the beautiful painted covers that were the hallmark of Gold Key Comics. You also get the nice back covers which were usually a very nice photo of the stars of the series, Richard Basehart and David Hedison. (I purchased several of these comics during the 1960s when they were published and stupidly cut the back covers off to put into a scrapbook I was making at the time.)
There is a nice foreward giving short biographies of the artists who did the very nice artwork on these books. There is also information on the creation of Gold Key comics which, along with Dell Comics, produced most of the comic book adaptions of the movies and tv shows of the time.
Many of the stories are kind of silly, (lets not forget that this is still a comic book,) but considering how silly Voyage got during its 3rd and 4th seasons, maybe they aren't so silly after all.
This book creates a nice sense of nostalgia for those of us who were children during the 1950s and early '60s. It brings us back to a better time and a better place. If you are a Voyage fan and a comic book fan, you will love this book. If you are a Voyage fan and have never read a comic book in your life, I think you will still enjoy it. I recommend it.

A trip down memory lane...a costly one, but an enjoyable one for anyone who grew up in the 60's like I did, with a weekly menu of great TV shows to look forward to. There was nothing I enjoyed quite as much as the shows created and produced by Irwin Allen, and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea was certainly his most successful.
I loved to collect comics back then, and the TV and movie adaptions put out by Gold Key and Dell were a particular treat. Unfortunately back then, we didn't have specialty comic book stores and so you picked up what you could at the local drugstore or 7-11, with no idea of when and what titles would appear every week. I don't ever remember seeing a single issue of VTTBOTS on the racks until years later, when the comic book stores finally started springing up. By then, the cherished issues were wrapped in plastic and displayed either up on the wall or in a glass case and you could buy them...if you didn't mind parting with your life savings!
So now, it's a great thrill to see these once inaccesible stories collected, in order, in an extremely cool hardbound collection...and looking better than ever! The price of this book is steep, but compared to what it would cost to try to buy the originals , it's an amazing bargain!
