A superb, complex masterpiece, November 26, 2003

"Wind It Up," McDonalds 2000 release, was a great collection of songs that borrowed heavily from influences such as Def Leppard and Chicago. Some of those influences remain on "Voyage," but they're less blatant and the songwriting now has its own distinctive trademark sound. The emotional, vocal, and instrumental range is impressive, ranging from simple heart-felt ballads to complex progressive numbers. The highlights are many, but three are the bouncing, almost Beatles-ish, "Where You Are, Where I Am," the 70's-inspired, foot-tapper, "Out of Time," and the true album masterpiece, "Patriot Dreams." Two minor quibbles: the drums (or drum machines?) lack punch and the production is not always as sharp as it could be. Nonetheless, an essential acquisition for any lover of melodic/pomp rock.
