Book Description

May 11, 2004 10 and up5 and upChronicles of Courage (Knopf Hardcover) (Book 1)
All Nick ever wanted to be was a whaling captain, like his father before him. What could be more glorious than the life of a whaleman, battling mighty sperm whales and returning home rich as Midas? So when his older brother Dexter signs aboard the Sea Hawk, Nick won’t stand to be left behind.

But life at sea is very different from what either Dexter or Nick expected. They are mercilessly overworked by a cruel and dangerous captain. The officers think nothing of beating the crewmen within an inch of their lives. And that’s only the beginning. When an awful turn of fate leaves them stranded in the harsh Arctic winter, they encounter the toughest battle of all—and this one is for their very survival.

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-10–A gripping story wrapped around the theme that there is no glory in whaling. Desperately wanting to follow in the footsteps of their late father, the captain of a whaler, Dexter and Nick leave behind their easy life with their aunt in New Bedford and sign aboard the Sea Hawk as soon as Nick turns 15. However, Nick soon discovers that he hates everything about the job–the captain, the crew, the harsh punishments, the danger, and the killing and processing of whales. The only bright spots are the rare sightings of the captain's daughter, and he knows better than to even look at her directly for the fear of dire repercussions, and being with his brother. Nick's experiences include an attempted desertion, sailing through the ice-filled waters of the Arctic, a shipwreck, and a struggle to survive the winter. The novel will educate as well as entertain, as there is a lot of adventure intertwined with the accurate descriptions of shipboard life, survival in a hostile environment, and the Native people who eventually rescue the castaways. The main characters, and some of the lesser ones, are well developed and readers come to care about their fate. In addition to being a good seafaring yarn, this title could be used as parallel reading about the history of 19th-century New England and whaling. An extensive glossary of whaling and nautical terms, a lengthy bibliography, and a historical note are appended.–Nancy P. Reeder, Heathwood Hall Episcopal School, Columbia, SC

From Booklist

Gr. 4-7. The first in Torrey's new Chronicle of Courage series of seafaring adventures, this richly detailed novel centers on Nick, a 15-year-old who signs a contract to "go a'whalin'" in 1851. Although he quickly discovers that he is better at carving scrimshaw than whaling, he is stuck--first figuratively, after his desertion attempt fails, and then literally, when he finds himself icebound in the Arctic. Readers are likely to find the burgeoning subplots, including an improbable romance with the captain's daughter, less engaging than the unblinking descriptions of whaling's more gruesome aspects and the Shackleton-esque survival story. Copious back matter, including a note about whaling history, a glossary, and a nine-page bibliography, attests to Torrey's command of her subject, but it does curiously little to eliminate the confusion that may arise from a faux-Victorian "introduction," which suggests that Nick really existed. Give this to kids who liked Nathaniel Philbrick's Revenge of the Whale (2002)--with which it has a similar cover image--but be prepared for questions about the story's historical underpinnings. More About the Author

Michele Torrey first became a published author at age ten, when her story about a dinosaur egg popping out of the kitchen sink appeared in the Seaview Heights Elementary newspaper. Her fifth grade class, located in Edmonds, Washington, wrote, edited, and published the newspaper.

While Torrey has lived most of her life in Washington, she has traveled throughout the world. As a child, she lived overseas in England and France, and spent most of her junior high and high school years in Heidelberg, Germany. At the age of four, she lived in Cockfield, England, where she first attended grammar school. She remembers the handbell calling the children in from recess, the morning's recitation of the Lord's Prayer, hot custard for lunch, and the bratty girl Rosemary who stuck out her tongue at Michele and got a spanking for it. When Torrey temporarily moved back to the United States and her classmates asked how English people spoke, she promptly responded in all seriousness and with a thick country accent, "Cheerio, ol' chap!" All in all, Torrey spent ten years of her childhood overseas. She returned to the Seattle area in her senior year, after which she completed a degree in microbiology and immunology from the University of Washington.

For the past sixteen years, Torrey has explored the depths of her imagination while writing novels for adults, young adults, and middle-grade. Her books include the CHRONICLES OF COURAGE seafaring series for middle-grade (Knopf), and the DOYLE AND FOSSEY: SCIENCE DETECTIVES chapter book series (Sterling). She is a two-time Thurber House Residency in Children's Literature nominee, plus a two-time winner of PNWA's Zola Award. Among other honors, her books have been chosen by the Junior Library Guild, named by VOYA as "Top Shelf Fiction for Middle-Grade Readers", and nominated for the Sakura Medal. Most recently, her book VOYAGE OF PLUNDER was a WA State Book Award finalist. Torrey is a regular presenter at writers' conferences and schools. She lives in South Bend, Washington, with her husband. They have three grown sons, two granddaughters, and a calico cat.

In addition to her writing and traveling, Torrey is a director and co-founder of Orphans Africa, a 501 c 3 nonprofit charity (www.orphansafrica.org). Orphans Africa works primarily in Tanzania, building boarding schools for children orphaned by AIDS.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perilous Whaling Adventure, September 23, 2010
This review is from: Voyage of Ice (Chronicles of Courage (Knopf Hardcover)) (Hardcover)
This is a fantastic book for 12- 14 year olds. It is packed with high sea adventures, good guys and bad guys that you love to hate.

Dexter and Nick are brothers whose father was killed on a whaling ship and their dream has forever been to also go to sea.

They make a hasty and unfortunate choice of whaling ships and end up with a brutal tyrant of a captain, Captain Thorndike. But the beautiful Elizabeth adds glamour and intrigue to the tale.

Every chapter ends with a cliff hanger and dares you to quit reading. You can't.
