A timeless treasure, July 8, 2011
This review is from: Voyage: The discovery of Hawaii (Leather Bound)
Aloha! Herb Kane's status as a National Treasure was well-earned. His knowledge of Hawaiian history and culture is translated beautifully through this book. The story-telling and illustrations are dynamic, sublime and intriguing. In addition to the narrative is an informative appendix. Not enough praise can be lavished on his work, nor gratitude for sharing and sustaining the oral tradition for generations to come. His spirit continues to inspire us all to embark upon our own voyages of discovery... Mahalo nui loa, Mr. Kane, a hui hou...

How and why was Hawaii discovered?, April 4, 2009
One of the difficulties of developing a history of the Hawaiian people is that they had no written language. Their history was recorded in the people, with chants, songs, hula, and stories. In Voyage, Herb Kawainui Kane depicts his version of this discovery. He does it through his prose and with his illustrations. Kane develops a scenario that requires some individuals to leave the Marquesas, to leave everything and everyone behind, and to head due north. His story includes the preparations for the trip, the rigors of a long sea voyage, and the deprivations and hardships suffered by the women and men. The book ends with Kane's explanations of early Hawaiian culture and navigation. This is an excellent book to help you visualize this voyage of discovery. My copy is an "author's edition," with an additional sketch and the author's signature taped inside.

Beautiful book!, March 23, 2009
Illustrated by Kane's wonderful, vibrant paintings, this book offers a vivid word and visual picture of how the voyage to Hawaii may have been experienced by its first settlers. The author combined his knowledge and interest in sailing, history, and Hawaiian culture with his excellent artistic talent to create an outstanding, visually enchanting, educational book!
