5.0 out of 5 stars An aural garden of delights August 15, 2011
Format:Audio CD
I bought this as an MP3 download and it has turned out to be one of my favorites over the last few months. Even though I have purchased other music I keep coming back to this one time and again. Not only are there sturdy tunes here (all written by Harland) the players are great. Someday we will look back at this and say it must have been an all-star session because the players are so good that I am sure they will each have a brilliant future. Eric Harland is my favorite drummer of his generation and he doesn't disappoint here. His energy and creativity are amazing. It sounds as if he is soloing the entire album yet at the same time he is interacting with whatever is going on in the foreground. Taylor Eigsti on piano, Julian Lage on guitar, Harish Ragamuffin on bass and Walter Smith III on tenor sax make this more of a team record than just a string of solos. Each of them is a strong soloist and an original voice but that is not the best of this album. The thing that keeps impressing me is the interplay between the players. Everywhere there is someone playing something interesting. If you are listening to the sax solo for example the piano, the guitar and the drums are also doing amazing things at the same time. Everywhere you turn you find an aural garden of delights. While I always knew what a fantastic drummer Harland was he is also a wonderful composer. The tunes flow into each other sometimes connected by piano or bass interludes but each distinct in its own right. From a whisper to a blaze each tune is a "voyage" in itself and the album as a whole is a great trip.

Walter Smith III - Saxophone
Julian Lage - Guitar
Taylor Eigsti - Piano
Harish Raghavan - Bass
Eric Harland - Drums

With an exceptional cast of musicians and nearly all original music Harland's debut album is a fantastic place to start for the world's greatest working jazz drummer. Harland has long been among the, if not the, most in demand drummer in jazz music and his own album matches his other worldly abilities. Smith and Lage create a fantastic front line, each with a highly distinct sound and extremely advanced technique. For those fans of Lage take note, this is the only album featuring him performing with a distortion pedal, a subtle and special treat. Raghavan is an extremely gifted bassist whose touch is a gift to listen to. Harland is about to take this group into the studio to record a follow up album for ECM which I'm very excited to hear. For now, this fantastic album is all we have to enjoy. Highly recommended.

Tl;dr - Buy it

My boyfriend gave his copy of Voyager to his niece so she'll start becoming jazz obsessed like he is. I surprised him with this and he was super happy!

5.0 out of 5 stars A drummer beyond... January 8, 2014
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
I've been a fan of Eric Harland for quite some time: I think his jazz drumming is truly original and incredibly nuanced. He seems to take joy in reinventing so many of the standard, rhythmic tools that so many other drummers take for granted. Therefore, I admit my bias.

I thoroughly enjoyed this album and found Mr. Harland's composition style to be almost as profound as his drumming. He is a true leader on this music collection (can we still call them albums?) and styles and accompaniment match his amazing rhythmic skills. I highly recommend you listen to as many samples as possible - and then buy it. You won't be disappointed.
