Editorial Reviews

Review

"I think the strength of this text is that it is very well-written in a voice that is non-intimidating, which is very good when trying to teach, especially students without much background in science or math (like ours)."

"This text is rather unique. The authors have written in a manner that is very accessible. The typical student of today is significantly different from those of 15 or 20 years ago, and this text is a significant step toward addressing the needs of those students." --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From 1978 to 1992 he was Executive Director of the Society, as well as Editor of MERCURY Magazine and the UNIVERSE IN THE CLASSROOM Newsletter. He has taught astronomy and physics at San Francisco State University, Cañada College, and the University of California Extension Division. More About the Author

Andrew Fraknoi has devoted most of his professional career to helping students, teachers, and the public to understand more about our exploration of the universe. He is the Chair of the Astronomy Department at Foothill College, near San Francisco, where he teaches courses on astronomy and physics "for poets" to more than 900 students each year. He is also Senior Educator at the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, an international scientific and educational organization, founded in 1889 and devoted to sharing the excitement of astronomy with the public.

From 1978 to 1992, Fraknoi was the Executive Director of the Society, and created "The Universe in the Classroom" (its newsletter for teachers) and Project ASTRO (a national) program to link volunteer astronomers with 4th - 9th grade classrooms. Family ASTRO, which he also founded, is a more recent project to bring hands-on astronomy activities and games to families around the world.

For over 25 years, he has served on the Board of Trustees of the SETI Institute, a scientific and educational organization devoted to the search for life elsewhere in the universe. He is currently Vice-Chair of the Board and served as one of the organizers for SETICon 2010, a national convention on the search for extra-terrestrial life in fact and fiction.

Fraknoi is the lead author of a series of non-technical introductory astronomy textbooks at the college level, the author (with the help of his son) of a children's book on astronomy, and co-editor of two books of science fact and science fiction (published in the 1980's). He is also a founding editor of "Astronomy Education Review" -- an online journal and magazine for those who teach astronomy, now published by the American Astronomical Society.

He was selected as the California Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Endowment for Higher Education and received the Gemant Prize of the American Institute of Physics (also won by Stephen Hawking) for a lifetime of contributions to the popularization of physics. The International Astronomical Union has named asteroid 4859 Asteroid Fraknoi in recognition of his work in public education and outreach.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great text for an introductory class or interested amateur, June 7, 2006
This review is from: Voyages to the Stars and Galaxies (with CD-ROM, Virtual Astronomy Labs, and InfoTrac) (Paperback)
"Voyages to the Stars and Galaxies" by Fraknoi, Morrison, and Wolff is one of the best introductory astronomy books I have come across. The book is marketed as a textbook for a (non-science major) college course, and as such it works great. But I also think the book would be ideal for anyone who is interested in astronomy, and wants something more substantial than what is offered in most popular astronomy books, but who also does not have the math background (or the time or inclination) for a math intensive textbook. In fact, even if you are interested in a more math intensive book, if you are new to astronomy, this might be a better starting point from which you can branch out later. The reason I say this is because the book gives such an excellent overview of astronomy, while providing very clear explanations of the underlying scientific principles. Thus you walk away from the book seeing the big picture and having a good grasp of the science behind it all. You have an excellent foundation from which to delve into more math intensive books if you so desire.

For example, consider the life of a star. A popular astronomy text will generally give you a nice description of the various stages in a star's life. Interesting, but just not enough meat for some people. A university level textbook will give you all the meat you want, but it may be difficult to see the forest through the trees so to speak. Voyages, on the other hand, gives you the descriptive overview, AND explains the scientific principles behind each stage, all without losing you in lots of math. It is a good balance.

Not that this book has no math in it. There is some, but it is generally minimal, or presented in side bars or additional problems that you can explore.

I've read other introductory astronomy texts, and none have been as consistently clear while striking the right balance for a first year college student or interested amateur.

This is a good book for the amateur astronomer. The text is easy to understand and goes through the appropriate material in a logical manner without getting too bogged down in details.

3.0 out of 5 stars review, December 20, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I realize that when I purchased this book that it was used. The seller profile said that that it was like new and it had the virtual astronomy lab codes. Unfortunately it was not. The condition was bad and the virtual astronomy lab access code was missing. So much for buying used books that are like new. Any way I contacted the seller and they refunded my money. I gave them 3 stars only because of the way the book was described and the actual book I recieved were 2 different things.
