A Milestone in the Making !,
By
This review is from: Voyeur (Audio CD)
New band line up, new attitude, new Berlin for the millennium;one vital ingredient that remains the same is Terri Nunn's strong, vocals. It's about time a truly gifted musical (and underrated talent) comes out to show the Britneys and American Idol Wannabes how it's really done and what it takes (to survive in the music industry) ! In addition, comparisons to Dale Bozio from critics need to stop. They (critics) only wish Dale Bozio from Missing Persons could have the vocal range and songwriting sensibility that Nunn possesses !This new project after 16 years is fresh updated material with a menagerie of different musical pop/rock styles. The music is now more organic sounding with a bit more acoustical flavor. There are a few semi-techno or rave tracks but not enough to send the rest of the set to techno club status. The special hidden bonus track of Pleasure Victim (from 1982) is a live slowed down version minus the new wave synth sound. On this track you can hear Terri's sheer vocal talent getting a workout! The greatest thing about Berlin is that you can listen to all 4 full length albums (Pleasure Victim, Love Life, Count Three and Pray, Voyeur)and each one stands on it's own merit. They are each very different despite the first 3 produced during the new wave era of the early 80's up to the Top Gun sound of 1986...The days of the cold and calculated new wave synth sounds are gone for good !In place we get a refined, reformed group led by one of today's hottest female musical talents around...

Terri may have a hit on her hands....,

WOW. I never thought that Terri Nunn would be able to come up with something this good after hearing the 3 new studio tracks at the end of the "Sacred and Profane" Live CD. I thought she was moving in a different direction, what with all the rap-type stuff contained in those tracks. This CD is reminescent of Madonna's "Ray of Light". A little different, but sorta has that feel to it. I really am diggin this CD, so if you are a fan of Berlin, have no fear, this is a no brainer...get it! Now if we can just get Ms. Nunn & company to play east of Vegas, we might get a good show here on the East Coast. Ps. Don't miss the hidden bonus track at the end of the record, an amazing acoustic version of the song "Pleasure Victim". An outtake from the last live CD perhaps? No matter, Berlin (in whatever form) still make great music and Terri Nunn has never sounded better!

I just got this from amazon and am listening to it for the 1st time right now. In one word - incredible! I have always been a Berlin fan, and this album (album? am I showing my age?) blows me away just like all the other ones did. My favorites right now are "Drug", "To a King", and "Blink of an Eye", but each and every song is a killer! If you have ever liked Berlin, or just thought you might like Berlin if it was 1984 and you were 18 again, you must get this album! Terri's vocal are just as powerful as they were 20 years ago. Anyone who reads this should call your local radio station and request any of the songs you like. This CD needs airplay! Also, hang on for the hidden bonus track at the end (think "live acoustical guitar"). I would give this CD 6 stars if I could.

Berlin Ready To Take The Torch Back,
By kvanarsdale@bmcmortg (Texas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Voyeur (Audio CD)
On Voyeur, Berlin is not trying to recpature its 1980's glory days. Rather, Terri Nunn has created a new Berlin (all new musicians) that is ready to take its place next to Garbage, No Doubt and other current electronic bands."Blink of An Eye" is the lead off track and first single. If this is not a top 40 hit, commercial radio should be crucified! "Shiny" and "With A Touch" are catchy dance pop numbers. While "Lost In My Mind" may be one of the best songs ever written by Ms Nunn and Co. Billy Corgan lends a hand on "Sacred An Profane," which has a film noir, haunting, cutting edge sound. "Drug" and "Stranger On The Bus" are hard edged electronic songs with a lot of guitar muscle in the mix. "To A King" and "Stronger Than Steel" show Ms. Nunn's vocal talents at their best. Yes, Ms Nunn is back and this album and her singing are stronger than steel!!

An unchanged voice to take you back...and move you forward..,

Sixteen years after the Synth-Pop group Berlin tried to downplay there electro-sound and go more anthemic on "Count Three and Pray"...to limited success...a new Berlin..spearheaded by the incredible Terri Nunn emerges. I was a huge fan of this group...their music always titillated me...and it was great to dance to! There first two albums on Geffen are classic...and are still mainstays on my CD player.. This new release rocks on...with the cool icy sounds of their earlier efforts...only lushed and layered out for the new millenium. And Ms. Nunn looks incredible..with her trademark blonde roots...but more importantly....she sounds incredible. Sexy tough...yet vulnerable all at the same time. Can you tell I am happy this girl is back?? Buy it!!!!

Even better than you've heard - a great comeback,

Believe the hype...for once...on first listen, you can already tell that this could be Berlin's best CD yet - great songwriting, strong vocals, updated arrangements that look back & look forward, all the while retaining that trademark "Berlin" sound, it's everything you hoped for in a Berlin "comeback" CD - and more! Terri Nunn's vocals never sounded better - the more recent "4PLAY" CD by Berlin is really a letdown, since she doesn't need to rely on lame covers, but THIS CD is the real deal - really, a total surprise from out of nowhere - a solid CD all the way!

Voyeur...Sexy, romantic & strong,
By Jerry Imburgia (Houston, Texas (Berlin central)) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Voyeur (Audio CD)
I purchased Voyeur the day it came out...after seeing the new Berlin line up play Houston back in May I could hardly wait for the release date. The new songs were so strong live, that I recognized them the first listen to the CD.The "single" Blink of an Eye is not one of the best and may give a false representation of the album, I recommend the intoxication of "Drug", the seductive rape fantasy "Stranger on the Bus" and the ballad "Stronger than Steel" Almost every song is a gem, illustrating different vocal talent. BUY THIS CD and RECOMMEND IT TO FRIENDS...you will not be disappointed. And please slap anyone who says, "Oh Berlin, from Top Gun" Berlin should not be remembered for that :)

Electronic supremacy,

Berlin's long awaited studio release is finally here....VOYEUR. It is an excellent album. .....To say Berlin is "back again" is not quite accurate. Terri Nunn being the only original member, reformed Berlin with a new lineup back in 1996. Guitarist Dallan Baumgarten has been with Berlin for at least 5 years ....Terri Nunn's vocals on VOYEUR are angelic and she still is hot as ever. "Blink of an Eye" opens the disc with an Indian-style guitar lick then takes you on an electronic/dance ride with trademark catchy vocals of Terri. "Shiny" is pure electronic techno dance....and very catchy and groovin. "Drug" is more vintage Berlin with some heavier guitar rhythm. "Stranger on the Bus" just totally jams ...awsome Terri vocals. Some nice ballads on here too like "To a King" and "Stronger than Steel" .......Berlin since 1996 has put out some limited edition EP's that were available through the bands website. FALL INTO HEAVEN (1998), FALL INTO HEAVEN 2 (1999), and a totally available SACRED AND PROFANE...LIVE (2000) which featured studio tracks "X-girl" "Angel's Wings" and Blondie cover "Shayla"..... Those releases showed a more 'guitar heavy' side of Berlin. VOYEUR is more synthisizer heavy and 'back to the roots' Berlin. Berlin is very versatile and full of surprises...they've always been ..with this new lineup and the old lineup. .......This album is fantastic and well crafted and every song is very good ......NO FILLER AND NO DUDS...and Terri Nunn still holds the reign of the sex goddess diva. VOYEUR RULES!!!

An absolute classic,

Clearly Berlins best ever recording. The lyrics are exceptionally well written, with the powerful Lost My Mind and World Is Waiting exponents of mature writing and silky delivery. Terri Nunn continues to deliver her beautifully powerful, yet measured, vocals seducing the listener with her every word. This album defines what classic adult rock should be - mature, passionate, powerful and seductive. A keeper.

BEST CD I"VE HEARD IN YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!Terri's voice is like "buttah"....you know....BUTTER!!!!!! Honey, silk......and whatever else is smooth, creamy and lush. The entire cd is like an equisite piece of priceless jewelry....with each song being an individual gemstone. "All I Ever Need"...is my fave...but they are all truly lovely....Old Berlin is retro, fun,cool...and priceless...but NEW Berlin is evolved, melodic, music that conjures images of color and lightness. The best i've heard in ages from a band....and Terri Nunn is sooooo incredibly beautiful/sexy/cool/talented.....need i say more? BUY THIS!!!!! You will be spinning it for years to come!!!!! |
