Genius,

I am OBSSESSED with this album!
Being a bass player, I feel that this is easily Marcus' best album that he ever did with Sanborn, the music is just so pure, soulful, and just damn funky. I get chills down my spine everytime I listen to it. 3 words baby..."RUN FOR COVER"!!!!

That's how long i've owned this amazing CD, but i have played it 14 times...i love everything about it. and to agree to disagree, i think "Wake Me" is the funkiest thing on the CD. I love all 7 tunes and wish that it was more along the lines of 50 minutes and 11 tunes, but who am i to mess with genius. David is was and will always be the inventor of soulful smooth jazz!

Some of Sanborn's best!,

After owning the LP, then cassette, I finally bought this on CD. This is some great music from great musicians: Sanborn, Marcus Miller, Steve Gadd, Hiram Bullock, et al.
Bad news first: "Wake Me When It Over" has not aged well. This one song is the only dated music on the record, however. Also, at a total playing time of 29:45, you're not exactly getting the most bang for your buck. Now the good news: "All I Need is You" could be the steamiest, sexist, smoothest piece of music ever recorded. EVER! This track alone is worth the price of the CD. I'll program my CD player to skip track 3 and listen to these smooth tones often. I would love to give this five stars, but with 50 minutes of room left on the CD, maybe they should have put As We Speak on the same CD for a world-class 2-for-1 (...)

In "Voyeur", Sanborn joins forces with Steve Gadd on Drums and Marcus miller on Bass, delivering a relaxing and funky R&B Jazz album.
Although short, this is in general a nice fresh album, not overly memorable but quite pleasing. Recommended mainly for all Sanborn's fans. If you like this artist, or looking for his best album so far; check out "Pearl"; you will not regret it.

Smooth as Silk (hence S.O.S),

Voyeur by David Sanborn back in the late 70's was the begining of love for jazz. To this day when I listen to this CD it takes me back to a time when things were so simple and uncomplex. Thus when I have a need for a "S.O.S" transistion from today's stress and strife, Voyeur, with the smooth sounds Mr. Sanborn creates melts away today's problems like hot butter melting on pancakes. I truely Love this album. Thanks David.

This was my introduction to David Sanborn's music and I've been hooked ever since. "All I Need Is You" is the most evocative love song you'll ever hear.

Get Down Funky Jazz,

This is one of the hottest funk/jazz records ever. Sanborn just blazes and the bass guitar work here is awesome. It's amazing being recorded in 1980 how fresh this album sounds even today. The only minor issue I have with the recording is Sanborn's sax is too far forward in the mix. I know it's his album, but if they would have backed his volume off just 10 percent it would have been perfection. In conclusion a very favorable four stars.

The Caress Of Instrumental Sophistifunkjazz!,

It wasn't too surprising considering the sound David Sanborn with Hideaway that his follow up album was going to have an incredible sound and flavor if he kept on the general progression and that he did. In fact with bassist/multi instrumentalist Marcus Miller onboard and Tom Scott assisting on some songs for good measured counterpoint this album only ups the strong funk groove of the previous album into just about every song. This is a short album, barely 30 minutes but it packs a punch and keeps jazz-funk fans begging for more. The sophistifunk sound of the previous albums title song extends directly into the similarly flavored "Let's Just Say Goodbye" which adds a degree of that locked tight Grover Washington style groove into every moment of the song. The slower "It's You" brings a light Spanish/latin dance flavor to the rhythm and on "One And A Million" and "All I Need Is You" Sanborn delivers two more ballads with a yearning, soulful style that have a slick slow groove to them that beefs them up just a tad beyond the slower numbers on the previous album. One of the best songs on this album is "Wake Me When It's Over". The song brings out the best not only in Sanborn but Marcus Miller as well. The phat slap bass lines and bass moog synthesizer breaks Marcus provides to the number as well as Sanborn's gravy thick sax licks bring the grittiness out of the sophistication of the song. A simalar flavor comes across on "Run For Cover",with Sanborn and Tom Scott both using an excellent doubling effect on sax (which Sanborn gets by himself on all the uptempo tunes here) on another excellent slice of funk. The album ends with the short but very melodic theme of "Just For You". This would be by NO MEANS represent the end of Sanborn's greatest period as far as dealing with his sophistifunk-jazz sound that he was really participating in (and influencing) during the same time but fact is this is one of his strongest albums of this era of his career and making a lot of sense with the previous album in the picture Sanborn's musical period 1980-1984 should be heard more or less in succession as each album makes a degree of steps forward from the others.

The track 'It's You' has never let me down in all the years this album has been released---the backgrounds with Patti Austin and Valerie Simpson elevate this cut like only a small few can do. If you can get 'Voyeur' for a decent enough price, do it.
