5.0 out of 5 stars Lavoe's first solo album!!!, June 9, 2006
This review is from: La Voz (Audio CD)
Here is the remastered edition of Hector Lavoe's first album. This edition includes the original cover art and an essay. It does sound much better than the previous Fania edition and it's cheaper too!
Produced by Willie Colon and featuring Mark Dimond on piano, Nicky Marrero on timbales and Ray Maldonado on trumpet, this is a New York salsa classic (1975)from beginning to end. No weak or filler tunes here.
BUY IT!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hector's all-time classic debut album., December 16, 2006

While never released as a single, Hector's truly superb cover version of the classic bolero "Tus Ojos" (previously recorded by both Santos Colon and Vicentico Valdes) is this album's crown jewel. In my opinion, said song is Hector's all-time best vocal performance--so much so, in fact, that I'd say it was nothing short of shameful that it wasn't issued as a single. "El Todopoderoso", "Rompe Saraguey" and "Mi Gente" were the big hits --which deservedly became classics--but "Tus Ojos" remains beautiful beyond compare.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of his most powerful albums., November 15, 2005

Although both "Rompe Saraguey" and "El Todopoderoso" were this album's two major hits, your real reason for buying this CD should be Hector's glorious remake of the classic bolero "Tus Ojos"--said song is (in my opinion) Hector's all-time most gorgeous and emotive vocal performance. This 1975 release remains one of Hector's most important albums and a 1970s Salsa masterpiece.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hector Lavoe's first solo album 1975, April 18, 2005
This review is from: La Voz (Audio CD)
Hector Lavoe (the singer of singers)is one of the best soneros (salsa singers) ever. Only second after the Sonero Mayor Isamel Rivera.

This is an original album, not a compilation of "hits". This is important because there is no way you can put all his best songs in a CD. And all those hits compilations always repeat the same songs. If you like his music you have to buy the original records, cause almost everything he sang is good.

This is not sweet sixteen's music. This is the real stuff. Real salsa music. Even when this suppose to be a solo album he is backed by the same musicians of Willie Colon's orchestra, and the same Willie Colon participate in the production of this album.

1. EL TODOPODEROSO (The Almighty) is a song about the passion of Jesus Christ. A five stars hit.
2. EMBORRACHAME DE AMOR (Make Me Drunk Of Love) is not a bolero but still a low tempo romantic song. A five stars hit.
3. PARAISO DE DULZURA (Paradise Of Sweetness) is a song about Puerto Rico. A five stars hit.
4. UN AMOR DE LA CALLE (A Love From The Streets) this song is not that good.
5. ROMPE SARAGUEY (rompe saraguey is a medicinal plant's name) this song is about a ritual of "santeria" in which the person take a bath with water containing the mentioned plant to cast away his bad luck. A five stars hit.
6. MUCHO AMOR (Much Love) this song is not that good.
7. TUS OJOS (Your Eyes) is about trying to figure out if she likes you , for the way she look at you. A five stars hit.
8. MI GENTE (My People) this song is almost an anthem in Puerto Rico. A five stars hit.

There are a lot of young salsa performers out there, but not one them can touch the artistry of Hector Lavoe. He and all of the other Fania artists were, and still are the best. It's a classic. La Voz is one to have if you're seriously into classic salsa!

This is a very enjoyable album. It's Lavoe's first solo effort after leaving the Fania All Stars and he does a great job. I'm really happy with it. I don't know if it's his best solo album... but its good fun and a good one to have for your salsa collection.
