About the Author

Steve Augarde studied at Taunton Art College in the late 60s and early 70s. He has over 60 books credited to his name; his first, Pig, (Andre Deutsch) was published when he was 21. He has also branched into television when he helped to create the BBC children's animated series Bump. Steve is a keen jazz musician and lives in Somerset. --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

More About the Author

Born in Birmingham, England. Art college background. Have been an illustrator, author, and semi-pro musician since late teens. Also worked in advertising, merchandising, and animation. Produced the artwork and music for two BBC children's television series, also the paper-engineering for many pop-up books.

My first novel for older children was 'The Various', a Smarties prizewinner in 2003. This was the beginning of the Touchstone Trilogy, the other two titles being 'Celandine' and 'Winter Wood'. My new novel, 'X Isle', is now available in the US, July 2010.

Its a very cute idea, lettting the child participate in the race, make choices along the way, but my son was not rough with this book and several pull tabs broke pretty quickly.

I purchased this book for my 3 and 5 year old grandsons. It is probably their favorite book. They can't put it down! I have never seen such a clever book for children. They love using the steering wheel, filling car w/gas, popping the cork at the end of the race, etc. If your child likes race cars, this is a great book for them. I let the 5 year old look at it by himself, but I always supervise the 3 year old--he doesn't always remember to be gentle w/pop up books. And I still can't believe it was a "bargain book"--it's an incredible value and tons of fun for children. I also recommend "Garage" by the same author.
