SUMMARY

If your deepest desires spontaneously manifested into reality, giving you powers and abilities once limited to your dreams, what would you do?

Donovan Cole hates his life: his body, his job, his relationship…until one night a violent confrontation outside a nightclub causes him to change – instantly infusing him with almost supernatural size and strength.

The transformation is only temporary, and before long he realizes that he’s not the only one; people around the world have been manifesting at random, able to bend the laws of physics that govern our universe…but they’re rarely seen or heard from again.

Who, or what, is causing them to disappear? What’s the trigger that causes someone to change? And is it arbitrary when someone manifests their powers?

Cole is drawn to a beautiful but troubled girl named Dia who is looking for similar answers, but has a solution to the unreliable nature of their unstable powers: an experimental drug known as ‘Muse’ that enables the user to trigger their abilities and transform at will.

Battling a powerful and mysterious faction known as The Collectors – as well as their own addictions – Dia, Cole, and a small group of friends race against time to unravel the secrets of their uncanny abilities…but they may not live long enough to find out.

5.0 out of 5 stars SWEET PILL TO SWALLOW October 3, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
The book Vs. Reality is a joy to read from start to finish. The characters are beautifully flawed and the action is gripping.

The book takes us on a journey with the main character Donovan Cole, as he is reborn into something he has always strived to be, all with the help of a little blue pill.

Blake Northcott writes some magnificent action scenes which will have you resisting the urge to jump out of your seat and shout (not recommended if reading in an airport).

So if you fancy a roller coaster ride that kicks and punches you in the face, as well as throws you around, read this book. My only criticism is that the book had to come to an end....or did it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply superb July 31, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I started this book last night, and I just finished it now. This is a superbly written book, with a pace that keeps you riveted to the story until it finishes. I am anxiously awaiting the next installment of this series. If Blake Northcott can keep writing this well, she has a really great career ahead of her, and she can definitely count me as a big fan. This book is a definite must read for any fan of superhero types with depth and personality. These are some seriously flawed and complex characters that Stan Lee himself would appreciate. So, you should go and purchase this book and read it right away. You won't regret it at all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow. October 3, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Twenty years from now Vs. Reality is going to be remembered as the first of Blake Northcott's best-selling books. What a privilege for us as readers to experience this movement as it happens. I won't spoil the book by rehashing all of the plot points. I will say though that the book moves at a race car's pace from the minute you open it until you close your Kindle. Northcott finds a way to build character depth "on the run" - quite literally and has a gift for dialogue that you will *feel* as you read her work. And what's a good hero with strong villains? Blake manages to introduce three villains with uniquely different tones and qualities that are truly a pleasure to read. This book reminded me of how I felt when I watched the very first season of Heroes on NBC. This is what that show should have developed into. Northcott has tapped into the hero in all of us and I cannot wait to see what she does in the sequel. You won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Worth Every Penny! August 24, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Vs. Reality is a quick and engaging read that will keep you pressing that [Next Page] button until there's nothing left to read. The first volume is short, but creates an entertaining introduction to a series that promises longer future volumes. It's an amazing debut from a first-time author, blogger Blake Northcott.

I bought Vs. Reality on the reputation that Northcott had already built up as one of my favorite bloggers and tweeters. The thing that impresses me most about her reviews is that Northcott seems to be one of the few people out there who understands that Entertainment Value is value.

So often we see fun movies, novels, and TV shows discarded because they aren't artistic or deep enough or because they *gasp* have some kind of mass appeal. Rarely do we see anything involving super powers getting any kind of praise by the serious critics because they forget that not every movie has the same purpose as Black Swan. Northcott has never been one to shy away from praising the commercial action movies, so I knew that no matter what, Vs. Reality was going to be fun.

Vs. Reality tells the story of Donovan Cole, a fighter who is used to concussions and beat-downs. When a chance encounter with a mysterious girl drags Donovan into her serious drama, Cole takes a hit that triggers a glitch in reality and allows him to manifest super-human abilities based on his own self image.

Vs. Reality blends the aesthetic of a comic book movie with the mind-f#@& of a Chuck Palahniuk novel. There's the suped-up action balanced well with gritty imagery. If there is one thing that I noticed straight from the start of Vs. Reality, it's that Blake Northcott is amazing at writing uncomfortable imagery.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of the year December 30, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
In a literary world full of crap, crap, and more crap; Vs. Reality was a fresh breath of air. Blakes voice comes out loud and clear in this modern take on a superhero origin story. Personally I hope Blake sells me the movie rights but I think she's got better things in mind.

"I'm going to die. Right here, right now."

DUDE. First freaking line!!! Right? First, we are witness to the near attack of a woman, who is "saved" by Goto and Mr. Heinreich only to have THEM turn around and abduct- I mean take her in for 'processing' and take her to 'The Basement'.

Then we meet Marcus Mitchell as he gets the crap kicked out of him inside The Octagon (extreme fighting) and then his coach telling him he's lost whatever it was that used to make him great... I'm assuming it's this Kimberly chick they keep mentioning! After the fight his best friend, Jens appears in an attempt to cheer him up,

"Jens is now smiling from ear to ear - the type of smile that usually signals to Donovan that there is a distinct possibility that they'll be running from the police at some point in the evening.

"I'm not in the mood to play Halo and do bong hits in your dad's basement, but I appreciate the offer."

Jens takes him to a high end night club, and it's there that Donovan meets Dia. Everything's going great until she spots Heinriech in the crowd and suggests they leave immediately... Except out in the parking lot they run in to Goto who appears to have been waiting on them! And here is where it gets wicked exciting!

I can't get into the plot without giving it all away, but I was totally impressed! There were certain aspects that weren't quite "for me" but that's neither here nor there- because Vs. Reality was fast paced and exciting, risky and had wicked awesome characters!

Vs. Reality is a must read for any action/adventure fan with a taste for Sci-Fi/fantasy! Complete with a twist at the end that leaves you totally wishing for the next book!!
