Pretty good sign kit all-in-all
on November 16, 2012
The sign is 8 inch across octagonal (NOT square as depicted in the illustration as of the date of this review), 1.15mm (approx 17 gauge) thickness, stamped aluminum with 2 mounting holes near the bottom of the sign with the lettering painted with reflective paint.
The colors are white, blue, and red (significance later).
Included are 3 or 4 self adhesive warning labels (I have several of these signs and the number included has varied): [WARNING! SECURITY SYSTEM] as shown in Customer Images above - 2 by 3 inches.
Also included is a black enamel painted 5/8" diameter hollow steel pole 0.56 mm (approx 23 gauge) thickness in two 9 ½ inch sections. When joined together with the included non-galvanized steel bolt and nut they make a 17 inch long spiked pole to mount the sign on if desired. Two more bolts are included to do so.
Another uploaded Customer Image is a side by side photo showing a brand new sign and one which has been attached to an unobstructed south facing gate post 5 feet above ground level for 16 months in a mid-Atlantic state. As expected, the red paint in the center of the sign surrounding the "VIDEO SECURITY PROTECTION" white reflective notice has faded considerably and is now almost unreadable except close up. There has been some but less fading of the other colors. The sign is advertised to be UV protected.
The aluminum itself has held up well, with no evidence of corrosion or paint peeling.
The included pole was not used so no comment can be made about its durability. Every one of the poles I have received has been moderately rusted on the inside. The enamel paint jobs have not been consistent - some being quite heavily applied and most recently rather thin, already showing some rust-through upon receipt. The two pole parts do not slide together easily due to the rust, enamel paint thickness and the area of the poles where holes are drilled being out of round.
The window labels stayed adhered well and have not faded. The south facing ones are beginning to peel very slightly at the edges after 16 months.
There has been quite a variation in price, depending on the vendor. I have paid seventeen, ten, and 8 dollars at various times. Vendors seem to change frequently, as often as a week apart. Interestingly, when Amazon itself was the vendor, the price was the highest.
I would buy this sign again (and obviously have). Sixteen months between replacements due to fading for a completely south facing sign (it gets the most direct sunlight there all year around) is not unreasonable. One which was facing a different direction, or that was in the shade, might fare better. Because of the frequent and large price changes I would probably wait until it was under 10 dollars as I'm not sure it's worth more than that.
That having been said, in my personal opinion it had the most profession appearance of all the similar ones available online and in stores that I saw, which was the reason for my original purchase. However, while this is a good product, it isn't perfect - and that's what I reserve 5 stars for.
