With hundreds of slides reaching the age that the images were showing deterioration, I needed to scan them or let them fade away. I have tried a few other slide scanners and the process was so slow that I never managed to get more than 100 done. The VuPoint Solutions Digital Film and Slide Converter (FC-C520-VP-BX2) is fast enough and requires little enough attention to easily do 100 in an hour while watching TV.

This scanner is easy to use. Put in SC card, plug in power, open it up, put some slides in the slide holder, push it in the slot and press the button. You load 3 slides at a time in the holder. The first time only you need to set the resolution (why would the default not be the higher one?) and the film type (BW/color/negative) - the settings persist. The image processing time is pretty quick; 3 seconds to adjust the light levels and you are ready to press the button. Scanning the image takes another 3 seconds. You get a 1 second display of the scanned image and saving to the SD card takes 5 seconds.

One of the best things is it does not need to be connected to a computer - just insert an SD card and scan JPEGs to it. With other scanners I've used they had to be connected to your computer and you had to make adjustments for each image with some buggy application. This one is easy to setup and operate in front of the TV.

The scanning is very automatic. I get good scans (the source is fading anyway so perfect is not a requirement) with no adjustments ... just load and press.

One bug I have seen is some images show a blue-ish strip near the bottom of the image. Rescanning does not help. It can probably be corrected digitally.

The slide tray is also a weakness. It has a tiny latch that requires a fingernail. Once you get the technique it works OK.

With more than 2,000 slides sitting in boxes for 35 - 55 years, the idea of digitizing them was overwhelming. I had tried scanning them earlier with an HP scanner, but the quality was poor unless I increased the pixel count, and then it took 3-5 minutes to scan a slide. With the VuPoint, the process was so much easier and the actual scanning of each slide took less than 5 seconds. But, the best part was the quality, which was as good or better than with my HP scanner. As with both experiences, some slides need to be lightened. I've used my Adobe Photoshop software, so I can't speak for the software that comes with the VuPoint. We can now share memories of events, trips, special people with our family. For the price, the VuPoint has exceeded my expectations.

I bought this mainly to convert slides to digital files and also to do the same on negatives. After two weeks of using the VuPoint scanner here are my observations.
Pros
1. Easy to use once you try scanning a couple of times. (The unit's menu is not user friendly, but with time it makes sense and you can live with it)
2. Saves file to a SD card which will hold more scans than most people will need. 2 gig SD are very cheap now. It will save a file to the unit's internal memory, but it does not have capacity for more than 20-40 scans internally. With the 2 gig SD card you can get 1000 scans on a SD card.
3. You can scan without using your computer. Downloading to the my PC's using XP and Vista was a snap both from the scanner and from a SD card reader.
4. Scanned negatives came out fine
5. Some slides came out fine

Cons
1. As other reviewers have stated, many dark slides have a meduim blue line about 1/3 of the way up the slide from the bottom. Very noticeable in the scan as it goes across the full image, but nothing on the actual slide.
2. The scan on the image viewer looks fine and looking at the slide itslef there is no blue line, so you think you got a good scan, but 4 out of 5 scans of have the blue line. (on slides taken indoors)
3. VuPoint Customer service stated there was no way to correct this since it was a problem with Kodacolor slides, not the scanner. (I wonder about that response) I'm not sure what type slide film was used on the slides I scanned, they were from the 70's.
4. The slide and negative holders have a locking method that is hard to open at first. They feel a little flimsy and will not take rough use.
5. The manual is very small and hard to read.

This was great. The directions look a bit complicated. I inserted my slides and I was on my way. Use the SD disc, it is easer to work with it. I have 3200 slides which will eventually get put on a DVD. It comes with a tray that holds 3 slides at a time. I wish it would have come with a tray that holds 10, but that's only a slight disadvantage. If I had to do it agian, I'd purchase it.

I chose this unit since it could be used with a Mac without any software complications. I was agreeably surprised at the quality of the images and the speed they could be processed. I had previously tried my flatbed Epson Perfection 2480 PHOTO but found the results unsatisfactory. Even at 4800 dpi the colors were dull, flat and the image darker than the original. Also it took 3 minutes to scan a single slide . The VuPoint scanning produced much brighter and vibrant colors and was not nearly as dark. Also scanning at 3600 dpi took only 10 seconds per scan. I digitized over 800 of my slides and found that it was quite easy to run through 100 slides within an hour. With a little effort and organization, reaching a through put of 150 slides/hr would not be too difficult. Since I have no negatives to digitize I don't know how that would work out. I did not use the software and computer USB cable which is included in the box, since I use a Mac. I just scanned onto an SD flash card in the VuPoint and then loaded the contents into my computer with the card reader.
The slide tray holds 3 slides and it's construction is pretty flimsy and should be handled with care. I found that opening the latch to load or release the slides was fiddly and sometimes took as long as it did to scan 3 slides (30 seconds). I found that on my unit that when sliding the slide tray into the VuPoint unit, the tray did not seat properly in the first slide position but tended to spring backwards a little so that the image was no longer correctly aligned in the view finder. By manually adjusting the tray and holding it in the correct position during the scan, the problem was overcome, but this manual assist should not be necessary. The second and third slides engaged correctly and did not move out of position.
