Book Description

Punto de Lectura May 2005
An irresistible novel about a force derived from the dark face of desire and power. Between Camargo, a powerful director of a reputable newspaper in Buenos Aires, and Reina Remis, a journalist half his age, arises a passion that leads him to a dangerous game of obsession. The intrigues and the erotic suspense fill this story with dominations, and corruptions, until its shocking end. His arrogance prevents him from seeing that other people's feelings are not under his control, and his blindness sinks him in a love story that will forever change his life. Almost everything happens twice, the second time always in a darker and more amazing way than the first.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

A bimonthly columnist for the New York Times and a Latin American studies professor at Rutgers, Martinez has written several novels, including the Argentine classics Santa Evita (Saint Evita, Planeta, 1996) and La novela de Peron (Peron's Novel, Random House Espa$ol, 1997). This latest work received this year's Alfaguara prize for new fiction (see news, Criticas, May/June 2002), a prestigious recognition that affirms his place as one of Latin America's best writers. In the current novel, G.M. Camargo, the powerful director of a recognized Buenos Aires newspaper, becomes obsessed with the young and talented journalist Reina Remis. After taking charge of her journalism career, the arrogant director can't accept the fact that he can't control Remis's feelings; this blindness turns their love affair into a distressing and dangerous relationship. Always aware of the political turmoil and social contrasts that characterize the Argentine capital, Martinez constructs an irresistible intrigue about desire, power, and machismo that will grip readers until the last page. Situations in the book tend to repeat themselves Camargo and Remis get together twice, and he drugs and hits her twice as well and tension increases each time. Martinez also doesn't follow a strict chronology, which will keep readers wondering why and how certain events happened. An accessible read, this winner is highly recommended for public libraries and bookstores. Carmen Ospina, "Criticas"

5.0 out of 5 stars Capital Sins: Pride, April 26, 2002
This book is part of a book series that focus on the 7 capital sins. 7 different books, 7 talented writers. This is that last book of the series and it is about Pride.

As protagonists, Camargo and Reina. Director of the most important periodical of the capital, the Daily one of Buenos Aires, Camargo is pledged in a crusade against the corruption at the higher government levels. With the same virulence and vanity, he falls in love with Reina. He wants her to prove his power and she wants him for ambition and curiosity. However, when her curiosity is satisfied, she sees that her way out of the relationship will not be an easy one...

A mix between hitckcock's hear window and Carlos Heitor Cony's " A casa do Poeta Trágico".

5.0 out of 5 stars Retrato de una obsesión, July 5, 2003

(REAL NAME)
