Book Description

6 and upJourney Through Time
Robbie and his dog Pip are playing ball right next to that sacred and mysterious place--the Necropolis. A mighty kick from Robbie sends the ball flying over the hill and out of sight. Looking for it, the boy and Pip stumble across the entrance to a strangely painted Etruscan tomb. They go down the narrow, dark stairway and end up in a square room whose walls are covered with brightly-colored paintings of vases, leopards, and people in funny robes. Pip finds a pair of mysterious wooden pipes on the floor. Robbie plays them, bringing Vulca--a man in the wall painting--to life. Vulca admits he took Robbie's ball. In return, he gives Robbie and Pip a tour of the Etruscan tombs and introduces them to the other people in the wall painting. As a thank you, Robbie lets Vulca take the ball into the wall painting with him, to puzzle other modern visitors to the tomb.
A three-page appendix at the end of the book goes back through the ages to tell us more about the mysterious Etruscans--what they did for a living, what clothes they wore, what games they liked, and what language they spoke. It also defines such intriguing words as necropolis, haruspices, augurs, and lucumo.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5 Each of these picture books begins with a modern child who travels back in time to learn a few facts about an ancient culture. Three pages of historical background follow the stories. In Nefertari, Anna follows a cat into the tomb of an Egyptian princess who tells the girl about some of the Egyptian gods and goddesses. In Vulca, Robbie and his dog meet an ancient Etruscan near the Necropolis. The format of the stories and the colorful cartoon illustrations will appeal to younger children than those for whom the cultural and historic backgrounds are intended. Information is slight, and the narratives are mildly amusing, though somewhat stilted. Reluctant readers may be drawn to them, but for a more informative and creative approach, try Scott Steedman's The Egyptian News (Candlewick, 1997). Cynthia M. Sturgis, Ledding Library, Milwaukee, OR

From Kirkus Reviews

In this entry in the Journey Through Time series, Robbie accidentally kicks his ball through a doorway in the ruins of an Etruscan necropolis; he enters and finds that the ball has become part of a fresco. When Robbie plays a pipe he has found, one of the characters in the painting, Vulca, comes to life and shows Robbie around. When, in another tomb, the ball again becomes part of a painting, Robbie decides to leave it there to surprise other visitors. The book concludes with three pages of information about the Etruscans. The story about Robbie and Vulca is modestly entertaining, with humorous pictures that help make the information accessible. Unfortunately, the reading level of the nonfiction section is well above that of the main story, and feels out of place and tacked on. (Picture book. 5-9) -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP.
