The Vulcan branded ladder is available several other places, and as the HFT ladder for significantly less and no shipping if you pickup from thier local stores. Doesn't quite get 5 stars due to several things:

-1) the hinge lock is not as durable as the comparable Werner or Little Giant versions

-2) the hinge lock is a bit harder to activate than the Werner

-3) the construction is just a bit less tight than the Werner or Little Giant

BUT the benefits over these main competitors:

+1) lighter than the Werner by about 7lb. This 17ft ladder is only a few lbs heavier than the Werner 13ft

+2) the 17ft ladder costs about the same as the 13ft Werner competitor

+3) ALL these comparable ladders take the main accessories from each other like the Little Giant platform, Little Giant work tray, or the Werner or Little Giant leg leveler (prefer the latter of these)

If I were a contractor, I understand why the Werner or Little Giant would be preferable. But for home use or equivalent infrequent use this multi-ladder is a great deal! Look for local sales that don't state the manufacturer, but the Vulcan label will be on the actual ladder.

PS - I didn't add Cosco brand in here, as the one 13' Cosco I tried had a serious problem with the hinge latch and the aluminum finish had me leaving more grey fingerprints compared to all the other multi-ladders. More info at sed-tech.wikispaces.com/ladders

The ladder is exactly as described and does exactly what the specifications state. That is why I rated it with 5 stars. Any multipurpose tool is a compromise and this is no exception. I bought my 17' Vulcan ladder from Harbor Freight and have used it several times. The construction is robust. The adjustments couldn't be any easier to understand and use. The folded ladder is relatively compact (56" x 24" x 8") which facilitates moving it around and storage, but it is not exactly light. I can handle it by myself but I doubt my wife could without a considerable struggle. The ladder has minimal flex in the full extended configuration, but lifting a 17' long straight ladder into the vertical position is generally a two person job. You need something or someone to keep the legs from sliding while you walk it into the vertical position. If you frequently need a straight ladder or work alone, a standard extension ladder may be a better choice. The ladder may be 17' long fully extended, but you won't be using the top 2 or 3 rungs in this configuration. That means your feet will be around 13' to 14' off the ground when you add in a compensation factor for the lean. The Vulcan ladder is comparable in performance, weight and height to my 8' Type 1A fiberglass folding ladder. The rungs on my folding ladder are wider which makes them more comfortable for extended work times, but the Vulcan ladder can be adjusted to compensate for irregular surfaces. The adjustments come in approximately 10" vertical increments. The Vulcan ladder has rubber feet and a flared design. I haven't been able to find any accessories specifically designed for the Vulcan multifunction ladder, but I have read accessories sold by Little Giant and Werner will fit. Hopefully that is true since I want adjustable extensions for individual legs.

The Vulcan Ladder is a good choice for a multipurpose ladder. We have some smoke alarms that are really high up on the ceiling and with this ladder we were able to change the batteries before the smoke alarms started beeping annoyingly in the middle of the night. It is also nice to have around when changing light bulbs. I'm even thinking of using it to clean the ceiling fan. I found this ladder to be very sturdy and it adjusts to various heights very easily. I thought it would be difficult to figure out but my husband had it figured out in minutes and taught me how to use the ladder in an equally short amount of time. So I think this is a great choice and having this ladder around sure is handy. Of course it is even better to have a big strong husband to climb the ladder. :) Having someone like me to hold the ladder steady is also a good idea.

As some have noted, it will not replace a traditional extension ladder, but will do for many situations. And it is much easier to store and transport. I bought this one so I could throw it in the car and take to my mother's place, when she needs something fixed up high. These kinds of ladders are particularly useful for tight stairwells, where a traditional ladder simply won't go. I see no significant difference between this ladder and its higher-priced competition (although I believe it's rated for 300 lbs, and Little Giant is rated for 250 lbs). As others have mentioned, it is available for considerably less at bricks-and-mortar retailers. Shopping around pays big, in this case.

Good product that I will use more than my longer planks. This one is not nearly as heavy to carry around and is just as stable as the longer one.

I have the 21' Vulcan Ladder. This is an up and coming brand and from what I know, superior to the Werner Cosco ladders. It has welded aluminum rungs unlike the Werner which has only two rivets on each rung (each side). Over time the rivets could loosen, but the welds on the Vulcan will not.

Many reviews here are Mixed in with Other models, I'm writing only about the 6' step that flips open to 12' extension, # VFW-06-61. I only bought this alum. ladder for it's narrow width of 15'' Other ladders are 15.25 , 17'' 18'' or 21'' @ base. I need to pass into 15.25'' opening. This is the Only 15'' found after much searching. The foot rungs are flat, sturdy & well engineered . I do not need or use the wheel bar. When used as a 6' step it is very stable while climbing on & off my 54'' tall flat-bed semi. It is OSHA rated & tagged as a " Type IA Extra Heavy-Duty Industrial Rating 300 lbs." ....This OSHA rating is of no value to me, but it is one less bit of minutia for the OSHA " inspector " to place on his "got ya" list @ a busy job-site.

Heavy, but well built and sturdy...not fear at full extension. Love it.
