3.0 out of 5 stars Too Soft...but better for an "older baby"
This toy is too soft for my teether. My baby is really looking for something that they can "sink their gums into". This toy is a soft, thin, rubber, squeaky toy, there really isn't a lot to it. Yes it is light weight, but we need a harder surface since my baby still prefers to munch on my thumb knuckles,(which is starting to be a bit much) than this toy. If your baby is...

My daughter was born blind and has a strong tactile defense when it comes to exploring new items with her hands. She has never shown any interest in pacifiers or teething toys of various types no matter how hard we've tried. She'd rather chew on her bottle nipple or sippy cup spout. She's teething really bad right now and has been in constant pain as several teeth are erupting back to back so I decided to give the yellow Chan Pie Gnon a try.

First off, HomeGreenSolutions processed and shipped the item very fast and I received it 2 days ahead of the scheduled delivery date. I took the toy out and recognized the familiar natural rubber feel and smell. I washed it as my daughter was playing in her crib and she immediately started responding to the squeaking sound as I was handling it. I brought it to her and introduced it by making a few squeaks and then gently put her hands on it so she could feel it. I then helped her to squeeze it. She was excited so I helped her to place the loop in her mouth. She started chewing it and flashed a huge grin. As I type this I can hear her in her crib playing with the chew toy and making it squeek. Finally, a chew toy that she likes! I couldn't be happier.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Teether! Softer than Sophie, February 21, 2010

This is a great little teether.

We have this and Sophie the giraffe, and our son loves both.

This one is made of thinner/softer rubber than Sophie, and is a simpler shape, so it's easier for him to get a nice big hunk in his mouth and bear down when his gums are hurting.

I also like the handle on the head of the yellow one. It is very easy for my 5.5 month old to grasp and play with. The small loop handle also makes it simple to attach the toy to the stroller or carrier we're using with a pacifier clip, so that it's not dropped/lost.

He honestly plays with both Sophie and this about the same amount, so I'm happy that we bought both.

*Tip: The prices for Vulli products fluctuate wildly on Amazon, so put them in your shopping cart and track them for a week or two to nab it at a low price. Once it's in your shopping cart Amazon will automatically alert you of new pricing on the product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than Sophie., February 12, 2010
By
Lindsey (San Jose, CA USA) - See all my reviews
We bought this item first because Sophie was too expensive and we weren't sure we were going to love it. First off, our daughter LOVED Chan. He's easy for young babies to grip and has that ever-so-familiar head for all the nursing babies. Our daughter used it all the time while teething; it was so effective that we didn't know she was teething until her teeth popped out! Well, needless to say, we loved it so much that we splurged on Sophie too! Sophie was welcomed, but not as much as Chan. Sophie doesn't squeak as easily and has more nooks and crannies that aren't so familiar. Although Sophie is good, Chan is GREAT!

She started using it at 4 months and is now 9 months and chomps on it just like she did 5 months ago! We can't say that for many of her other toys!

If your baby is really looking for something to really chomp on, this toy is way too flimsy, and NOT the toy for you, keep looking.

POSTSCRIPT:

This toy has become on of my baby's favorite AFTER his teeth have started "sprouting"it's soft enough to not irritate sensitive gums ,yet swishy enough to provide the chewiness required. Great for after 5 months.

5.0 out of 5 stars Odd looking but my daughter doesn't care!, September 10, 2009
This little guy - we call him "blue man" - is odd looking but my 7 m.o. daughter loves him. She got him when she was 2 months old and has loved him more and more. He's made out of the same soft but sturdy rubber that Sophie the Giraffe is made out of. He squeaks when you squeeze him and the air going in and out makes his head bob up and down. The knob on the top of his head is kind of like a nipple and my daughter sucks on it like it is - it's a toy, a squeaker, a pacifier, etc. We take "blue man" everywhere. He's just the right size for little hands. But, like Sophie, don't get him wet - it muffles his squeak and it's really hard to get the water out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great teether, June 22, 2009
This teether is easier for my 5 month old daughter to get in her mouth than Sophie la girafe. She loved it at first sight and enjoyed rubbing the handle (?) at the top against her gums. A little odd-looking, all right, but it sure makes baby happy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Everything we hoped for!, February 2, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
We bought this item, as well as the pink one, after reading some frightening reviews about Sophie the Giraffe. I had desperately wanted a Sophie as my daughter's nursery had a safari theme and we had A LOT of giraffe print items. I had the opportunity to get one through our Huggies Rewards program, but by the time I made the decision to order they were all sold out. After reading customer reviews here on Amazon, I decided against Sophie (I do believe parents should monitor their children when playing with toys; however, if something is sold as a chew toy you would expect it would not be a choking hazard - at all!)
After reviewing the Chan Pie Gnon trio we decided that this was an excellent alternative - no long pieces to choke on and a variety of chewing options. As soon as they arrived in the mail they were washed and introduced to our daughter who immediately started chewing on the head (At 5 months old she is just starting to teethe). They were a hit and are now a favorite in her "chewie" collection. [I may even have to order the blue one, just to complete the trio!] The yellow in particular is helpful for those hard to reach back teeth - similar to Sophie's nice, long legs.
Although I know parents that own a Sophie and think she is great, I feel that these little guys - made by the same company and from the same material - are a much better option (even though I would love to have one in giraffe print!)
I will say this - the squeakers are far easier to squeak on these little guys so if they are going to a home with a "squeaker loving" dog (like ours) keep a close eye on your canine companion...they draw a lot of attention! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Our Toddler loves this, February 5, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Our 10 month old already had Vulli's 'Sophie'Vulli Sophie the Giraffe Teether, Brown/ White, and had never cottoned to the pacifier, so when he had to stop breastfeeding I ordered Chan for Christmas. It was VERY successful!

He loves that it squeaks, and he really likes to chew on the top of the head (both the nub and the whole head). He also loves to wave it and make it squeak that way. It's of a lighter, smother plastic than animal squeaky toys, and even adults find it fun to play with. Apparently, making squeaky toys squeak on purpose is a developmental marker, too.

We do find that it gets discolored quickly and needs to be washed with dish soap to come clean; if you submerge it will take a while to dry out and squeak again.

3.0 out of 5 stars Comparison With Sophie For Those Interested, September 23, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
My son is 4 months old and has been chewing on Sophie since about 2 months. He quickly got the hang of her and by about 3 months was able to maneuver her into any position he wants. I wanted to get more toys that I felt comfortable having him put in his mouth since that's where everything goes, so I purchased Gnon (yellow). While very cute and fun, because it squeaks so easily, my son prefers Sophie. Gnon is made of a softer, thinner rubber than Sophie so it squishes in very easily. My son is really aggressive when he chews and I don't think Gnon is as satisfying to him as Sophie to chew - not enough resistance - and he becomes frustrated. That said, I'm glad I got it to have a variety of chew-safe toys for him, but just wanted to let those out there who may be curious if this is a less expensive replacement for Sophie, in my opinion it is not. This may be a good starter because of its simple shape but definitely not a Sophie replacement. I think my son will eventually like Gnon more for how easy it is to make a lot of noise with him. Also, the reason I gave this 3 stars instead of 4: the paint is a little sloppy. The yellow feet on mine has clumps and looks dingy in spots. Gnon also seems to attract more lint and dirt than Sophie, maybe because of the thinner rubber. Hope this helps someone who is trying to decide.

3.0 out of 5 stars Difficult to keep clean and dry, April 24, 2010

Directions say to gently surface clean but this didn't seem good enough. While quickly rinsing, it took in water that was never able to be fully squeezed out. Not to mention, while baby chews on it, it sucks in her saliva as well. Get the Sophie- no problems with that toy under similar circumstances.
